Even individuals who are not fans of BTS are likely to recognize BT21, a merchandise line created by Line Friends that showcases characters designed by the members of BTS. Although BT21 has gained worldwide recognition as its own brand, its strong ties to BTS cannot be denied.
Despite this, on June 18, the official BT21 account shared a post promoting Line Friends’ latest merchline collaboration with NewJeans, resulting in a backlash from fans.
Fans believe that Line Friends was attempting to capitalize on the popularity of BT21 and BTS with this move, which is completely unacceptable.
Even BT21 Japan officials have more followers than line friends both combined..Its obvious at this point pic.twitter.com/BGMWnfFXLE

As a consequence, numerous comments denouncing the unwelcome promotion have surfaced online, leading to the swift deletion of the post promoting NewJeans.
On June 19, BT21’s official account issued an apology, stating the following:
“Hello, we are Team BT21.”
We would like to express our sincere apologies for the recent incident where an advertisement from another IP was mistakenly shared through our official BT21 X account.
Despite a setting mistake, we wrongly advertised unrelated content. However, we have since resolved the issue and assure you that we will take necessary measures, such as increasing supervision and implementing guidelines, to avoid any similar incidents in the future.
“We appreciate your understanding and ongoing support.”
Despite the explanations given by Line Friends, supporters of BTS continue to express their frustration, arguing that the company’s excuse is most likely fabricated given their stature as a major brand. It seems improbable for a brand of such magnitude to mistakenly use the wrong account for advertising purposes.
Currently, the apology post on BT21’s account is still inundated with negative comments.
