Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding BTS member Suga’s drunk driving incident, new reports have emerged and sparked further complaints. These reports have prompted an investigation into Suga’s alleged neglect of duties during his alternative military service, adding to the ongoing debate.
The initial reports of Suga’s inappropriate behavior during his public service training were brought to light on the “Public Service Human”app, which specializes in addressing social service issues.
During basic training in November of last year, a public service worker shared their experience serving with Suga. They alleged that as the leader of a small group, Suga did not adequately participate in the classes.
The public service worker reported that Suga had not attended class (training) for the full five days. Due to this, the instructor issued a warning, feeling that Suga’s behavior was excessive. Suga would often wake up, nod off without being fully aware of his surroundings, and then check his phone before falling back asleep.
The employee also observed that Suga’s actions resulted in the group having the lowest participation rate, comparing him to a “half-hearted bully attempting to appear cool at the start of the academic year.”
In 2023, both Suga and fellow public service worker Dawn attended the 35th basic training course at the Social Service Training Center in Boeun County, North Chungcheong Province. Witnesses from the course noted that Suga took on the role of group leader and did not sign autographs, unlike Dawn. The training was held from November 20 to 24, 2023, as confirmed by the center.
The group leader position is typically occupied by a volunteer who is selected and approved by the group members. This position is comparable to that of a squad leader in active duty. Fulfilling the responsibilities of a group leader can result in receiving a commendation and, on rare occasions, special leave. However, it has not been confirmed whether Suga was awarded such an accolade.
The allegations of Suga neglecting his duty started circulating online in late 2019, extending beyond the initial app where they were first made. In light of the complaint against him for drunk driving, further complaints have also been submitted.
One of the complaints stated that Suga’s drunk driving was a result of an inappropriate work attitude. It urged the Military Manpower Administration to investigate his service conditions by reviewing CCTV footage from the service institution.
The accuser also insisted on a comprehensive examination of the “service management conditions”at Suga’s service institution and requested severe consequences, such as legal action, if any unlawful activities are uncovered.
The Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration has been tasked with investigating this latest complaint, and the investigations are still ongoing. The previous complaint filed against Suga for neglect of duty has also been assigned to the same office, and it has been reported that an investigation has commenced.
