On August 9th, Korean media provided updates on the latest developments surrounding Suga (BTS) and his drunk driving incident. The Yongsan Police Department in South Korea has announced that they will be conducting a criminal investigation into the idol for driving under the influence. This comes after Suga fell off an electric scooter while driving on the night of August 6th.
According to the test results, Suga’s blood alcohol level surpassed the limit for license revocation, measuring at 0.227%. This is comparable to the amount found in actress Kim Sae Ron’s blood during her car accident.
The motorized bicycle that Suga was operating falls under the category of scooters. As per South Korean regulations, individuals with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.2% or more could potentially be sentenced to imprisonment for a period of 2 to 5 years, or be subject to a fine ranging from 10 million to 20 million won. These events have led to an overwhelming backlash against Suga, with the response being more critical than ever before, particularly as the findings of the police inquiry contradict the apologies given by both Suga and his management company.
Amidst the growing controversy, a rap verse by Suga in the 2016 hit song Fire began gaining traction on K-pop forums. The success of Fire was one of the factors that contributed to BTS’s rise to fame and influence in South Korea, eventually propelling them onto the global stage. The song was even considered a national sensation, with young people singing and dancing to it passionately.
The lines in Suga’s rap verse in Fire, “I’m ruined, I’m completely drunk; I stand on the street shouting; Insane like a madman; Everything is chaotic,…”gained attention when a video of him performing it went viral on X (Twitter) shortly after news of his drunk driving incident surfaced. Many netizens found it ironic and made jokes about the “prophetic”nature of Suga’s words in relation to his current predicament.
Despite being a member of a worldwide group, Suga had a thriving life, enjoying the spotlight of fame. Renowned for his musical abilities, Suga is admired as a mentor by many young artists and idolized by numerous fanatics. However, his reputation, along with the group’s, was tarnished by a single incident of drunk driving.
In South Korea, there has been a growing negative public sentiment towards the idol, with many calling for Suga to be removed from the group due to his serious violation of the law. This incident is considered to be the most significant scandal in Suga’s career and in the entire history of BTS.
