Despite being released in 2020, BTS Suga’s (Agust D) solo song “Daechwita”is being compared to the solo song of an idol from YG Entertainment.
On May 27, 2024, a well-known South Korean online community forum called TheQoo shared a post titled “Was the concept of ‘Daechwita’ similar to that of ‘FIANCE’?“.
In the post, the original poster made a comparison between Suga’s “Daechwita”and WINNER member Mino’s solo track “FIANCE,”which was also released in 2018.
Both idols were observed to incorporate a wild Korean monarch theme. They were both dressed in black with gold details and had long, blonde hair tied back with a black headband.
Furthermore, the music video featured both idols wearing gold jewelry as accessories.
The original poster pointed out that certain individuals have asserted that the “FIANCE”music video stands out because it mainly takes place indoors, featuring a throne room and women donning long, sleeveless red dresses.
Their eyes are concealed by red fabric, and they have their hair tied in low ponytails, these women do.
Although the “Daechwita”music video features scenes set in an indoor throne room, similar to the one seen in the “FIANCE”music video, there are also many outdoor scenes. However, the throne room depicted in the “Daechwita”video is noticeably distinct from the one in “FIANCE.”
Both Mino and Suga’s music videos utilize different color schemes and settings. Mino’s video features a red room and showcases him surrounded by women, while Suga’s video takes on a darker tone and depicts him alone in his scenes.
Despite the noticeable differences, Korean netizens are of the belief that the music video bears some resemblance. While some are of the opinion that Suga did not directly copy, but may have drawn inspiration from “FIANCE”for his own work. Korean netizens are stating that the video has been altered sufficiently to avoid being deemed a copy.
Despite this, some disagreed and argued that the music videos for “Daecwhita”and “FIANCE”were nearly identical. They questioned why Mino had not addressed the issue.
Additionally, HYBE was criticized for their persistent tendency to imitate others, citing previous incidents where their artists were caught plagiarizing from other artists.
Some comments indicated:
- “I am not a fan of either artist, but they do look similar. It looks like they referenced it. They just changed the colors, used a blonde wig, and a royal robe, and both have the crazy king concept. If you think they didn’t reference it, you’d need to show other music videos that are similar that were released.”
- “I think it’s an obvious reference. And it was filmed a year and a half after? This is a bit much…”
- “It seems that that company’s specialty is ‘referencing’ and releasing within two years. Just to avoid triggering fans more, I’ll say they didn’t copy but reference.”
- “What kind of group just references endlessly?”
- “It looks the f*cking same to me? Is Song Mino a saint?”
- “Truly a copycat company. They just copy anything that looks good.”
