BTS Surpasses IU & Legends to Become “Nation’s Top Singer of the 21st Century’”

Based on a poll conducted by Gallup Korea from August 19 to 23, commissioned by Star News, BTS emerged as the top artist with a 43% approval rating in response to the question “Who is the most popular singer/group in the nation?”(respondents were allowed to choose a maximum of two options). The survey was conducted among 1,052 individuals aged 19 to 69 from various regions in South Korea.

Ever since their debut in 2013, BTS has been leading the global K-pop craze. They were honored with the “Top Social Artist”trophy at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in the United States. Additionally, their popular track “Dynamite”made history in 2020 by becoming the first Korean song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The survey results reflect the exceptional accomplishments of BTS in the history of K-pop. This group received overwhelming support from all demographics, including gender, age, region, and occupation. It is worth noting that they received the highest support from individuals aged 19-29 (44%), as well as those in their 30s (39%) and 40s (53%).

Following BTS, veteran singer Cho Yong-pil held the second spot with a 33% approval rating. Cho Yong-pil has established himself as a living legend, having pioneered the “oppa craze” in the 1980s. Prior to the rise of BTS, he was widely regarded as the singer most deserving of the title “nation’s”. Despite his peak years being in the past, Cho Yong-pil has maintained his status as the “King of Singers”through over 50 years of continuous activity. Despite debuting at the young age of 15 in 2008, singer-songwriter IU has cemented her position as a dominant force in the music industry, coming in third with a 19% approval rating. Her significant influence has garnered her particularly high support from audiences aged 19-29 (39%) and in their 30s (22%).

After IU, Lim Young-woong obtained the fourth position with 18%, while trot icon Na Hoon-ah secured fifth place with 17%.

In the rankings, BLACKPINK took the 6th spot with 9%, while the renowned Lee Mi-ja claimed 7th place with 7%. Seo Taiji, Girls’ Generation, and g.o.d all shared the 8th position with a score of 6% each. BIGBANG grabbed the 11th spot with 5%, closely followed by Nam Jin, Lee Seung-chul, Kim Gun-mo, Shin Seung-hoon, Lee Hyori, and H.O.T., who all tied for 12th place with a score of 4%. Wonder Girls secured the 18th position with 2%, and Rain and Roo’Ra tied for 19th place with 1%.

In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star News, a survey was carried out. The margin of error is ±3.0 percentage points with a 95% confidence level.
