On May 24th at 1 p.m. (KST), BTS’s leader RM and the girl group NewJeans made their return with new songs.
RM presented his latest solo album, titled “Right Person, Wrong Place”, along with the accompanying music video for the lead single “LOST!”. This album delves into a spectrum of emotions that are relatable to all individuals. RM adopted a narrative style in his lyrics, conveying his genuine thoughts in a straightforward manner, resulting in some tracks being labeled as 19+. He was involved in the creation of all 11 tracks, each belonging to a different genre, featured in this album.
“The song “LOST!”is a fast-paced alternative pop track that embodies RM’s signature style. Its music video, which features RM as an observer navigating through a maze, captivated viewers with its unique concept and ability to evoke various life stories. Despite lacking a clear narrative, the “LOST!”music video encourages viewers to form their own interpretations and meanings from its message.
“The renowned French director Aube Perrie, known for directing the MVs for “Music For a Sushi Restaurant”and “Satellite”by Harry Styles, was at the helm of “LOST!”This further showcases RM’s dedication to improving the visual standards of his comeback. Despite serving in the military, RM’s comeback album was meticulously prepared. In addition to the pre-release MV “Come back to me”and the title MV “LOST!”, there will be 3 more music videos released during the album promotion.”

During this time, NewJeans officially returned with their double single “How Sweet”and “Bubble Gum”after 10 months since their EP “Get Up”. The music video was released just 3 hours after the audio on music sites. Following this release, NewJeans will continue their momentum with their Japan debut single “Supernatural”in June.
“Produced by 250, the mastermind behind many hits of the girl group, “How Sweet”is an energetic hip-hop track infused with Miami bass. Not only does the song feature a lively melody and infectious lyrics, but the accompanying music video also highlights the refreshing charms of all five members.”
Despite the absence of elaborate settings, the MV for “How Sweet”features NewJeans members embarking on a journey and reveling in their youth as they dance on the streets. In contrast to their previous music videos, this one appears to be more simplistic. There is speculation that the ongoing conflict between HYBE and ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin may have impacted NewJeans’s promotion for their comeback.
RM’s Rankings Slip Behind NewJeans on the Charts
Despite his position as the leader of a globally renowned boy group, RM’s chart performance appears to be lacking. Within 3 hours of its release, the MV for “LOST!”only garnered 800 million views, a significant difference from BTS’ usual achievement of 1 million views in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the track only managed to reach No.253 on Genie and did not even make it onto other music charts in terms of digital performance.
In just 2 hours since its release, NewJeans’ latest single “How Sweet”quickly rose to the top of music charts. It claimed the No.1 spot on Bugs, No.7 on Melon, and No.7 on Genie. The other track on the album, “Bubble Gum,”also saw significant success, reaching No.3 on Bugs, No.14 on Melon, and No.15 on Genie. Impressively, within the first hour, the music video for “How Sweet”had already accumulated 542 million views.
Despite facing controversies, NewJeans continues to excel and has even outperformed their senior RM. If this positive trend continues, there is a chance that NewJeans will climb higher on the charts and become a competitor to IVE and aespa.
Why are the reactions for both RM and NewJeans’s comebacks not explosive?
The primary factor is the intense conflict between HYBE and its subsidiary label ADOR. RM’s latest album failed to spark conversations among netizens and received little attention outside of the fandom.
Despite NewJeans being directly involved in the dispute, the response to their comeback was not very enthusiastic. Due to a lack of promotion, there are not many discussions about the group’s images and music. Instead, netizens are primarily focused on the group’s plagiarism controversies. There have been significantly fewer articles about NewJeans’s upcoming Japan debut and comeback compared to their previous promotions. The group has only made one music show recording and performed at one university festival, highlighting a noticeable difference in their promotional activities.
According to netizens, HYBE is disregarding the NewJeans due to the fact that the members openly express their support for ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin.
Despite extensive preparation, including the creation of a concept and five music videos, RM released his album during his military service. However, due to the weighty and profound messages conveyed in the album, he faced difficulties promoting it without the opportunity to perform on music shows, ultimately resulting in its failure to reach the public.
