BTS’s Suga Receives Funeral Flowers Following Incident Involving Former RIIZE Member Seunghan

The recent events within the K-pop fandom have stirred significant conversations, particularly surrounding RIIZE, where a faction of fans has resorted to sending funeral wreaths and protesting for the dismissal of member Seunghan. This uproar follows SM Entertainment’s contentious decision to reinstate Seunghan after he was suspended for a period of 10 months.

Since its debut in September 2023 with a lineup of seven artists, RIIZE has garnered rapid popularity, amassing a considerable following throughout Asia. However, just two months post-debut, Seunghan’s activities were halted due to the unauthorized release of private photographs. Consequently, for nearly a year, RIIZE has operated as a six-member ensemble. A significant portion of its supporters in South Korea, Japan, and China—key markets for SM Entertainment—have shown their preference for this six-member formation, expressing dissent towards Seunghan’s potential return.

Funeral Wreaths for RIIZE's Seunghan

The choice made by SM to allow Seunghan back into the group ignited fierce reactions from domestic fans of RIIZE. In a notable display of protest, about 1,000 wreaths were sent to voice demands for Seunghan’s exit. Amid the growing controversy, SM responded by confirming Seunghan’s departure from the group.

This episode has gained “legendary”status in K-pop circles, marking an unusual instance where a prominent entertainment entity heeded fan requests. The phrase “funeral flower protest” has emerged as a trending topic in Korea. While this form of protest appears to be effective, it raises serious ethical questions.

BTS Suga and Funeral Flowers

Some critics argue that RIIZE supporters crossed a line. Despite Seunghan’s mistakes, sending funeral wreaths and inflicting mental distress on him is seen as fundamentally inhumane. Notably, former DAY6 member Jae condemned such actions, equating the act of sending funeral flowers to artists with “attempted murder.”

Adding to this unfortunate trend, another artist became a target on October 20 when a series of funeral wreaths were dispatched to HYBE’s headquarters, demanding Suga of BTS to leave the group. The messages attached to these wreaths accused Suga and condemned HYBE, even categorizing the rapper as a criminal.

BTS Suga Supporters

This incident relates back to August when Suga faced prosecution for driving under the influence, registering an alarming blood alcohol level of 0.227—making it one of the highest among K-pop idols. As a result, he faced intense public criticism, and TV networks edited him out of their broadcasts.

The legal proceedings concluded with Suga receiving a fine. Although the incident initially seemed to fade from public view, it resurfaced with the demonstrations on October 20.

Opinions on social media have varied widely. Some users argue for stricter penalties for idols like Suga who break laws, while a majority of BTS fans disapprove of using funeral wreaths to press for his removal from BTS.

In a response to the ongoing situation, numerous BTS fans have rallied in front of HYBE, sending trucks and hanging banners in support of Suga. This indicates a complex dynamic within the fandom, as reactions to Suga’s controversy remain polarized.
