Bungou Stray Dogs fans express frustration with manga’s recurring character deaths

Despite the latest chapter of Bungou Stray Dogs causing dissatisfaction among fans, it is primarily due to the series’ recurring habit of character deaths.

Chapter 114.5, titled ‘Ressurectio, Part 2′, is filled with numerous shocking revelations.

Despite its significance in unveiling Fyodor’s ability in Crime and Punishment, the latest installment also brings to light the surprising fact that Fukuchi is still alive. This unexpected revelation is a shocking twist, especially since it seemed like his story had reached its conclusion just two chapters ago.

Despite his debut in Bungou Stray Dogs, Fukuchi has consistently encountered close calls with death. While Atsushi and Akutagawa’s combined attack appeared to be his demise, he managed to cheat death by utilizing his ability to reverse time. However, his ultimate and most notable death occurred at the hands of Teruko in Chapter 113.

Despite failing to kill his childhood best friend, Fukuzawa was stabbed by Teruko through the chest in the chapter. The wound was lethal, piercing through his heart and seemingly causing his death. However, Chapter 114.5 reveals that Fukuchi miraculously survived despite the severity of the stab.

This stance has sparked backlash from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. Criticism has arisen over the series’ lack of major character deaths, with the sole exception being Oda.

Despite multiple fake-outs involving characters like Dazai and Fyodor, ultimately no real damage was done. However, Oda’s death was the only event that truly altered the course of Dazai’s life.

The main point of contention is that regular fake-outs lessen the impact of a character’s demise. Bungou Stray Dogs has consistently excelled in portraying the emotions of its characters, but the omission of actual deaths has sparked criticism.

“According to a user on X/Twitter, the manga will come to an end on the day that Asagiri kills an important character (excluding Odasaku and others).”

“Another person comments that it is poorly written that characters never die when they are supposed to.”

Expressing their thoughts, another user tweets, “I truly believed Fukuchi had passed away. It’s about time some characters in this show actually meet their demise, I swear.”

Despite facing criticism, the series appears to be taking steps to address this issue. In the most recent chapter of the Bungou Stray Dogs manga, Bram’s death was depicted as Fyodor used his ability to take over him. However, it remains to be seen if Bram’s death will be permanent.
