Byun Woo-seok Recalls His Unknown Days, “I Was Eliminated In The Middle Of Script Reading”

On May 22nd, episode 245 of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block”welcomed actor Byun Woo-seok as a guest. Byun Woo-seok, who is adored for his portrayal of Ryu Seon-jae in tvN’s drama “Lovely Runner,”was featured on the show.

After making his debut in tvN’s drama “Dear My Friends”, Byun Woo-seok had high hopes for his future performances. However, the actor later revealed, “During the script reading period, I would often get eliminated.”

He recounted, “It was a string of traumatic experiences. There were moments where I was verbally abused and my self-confidence plummeted. As a model, I enjoyed being in front of the camera. However, the negative atmosphere also caused me to develop a fear of being photographed. I questioned if this was the right path for me and was concerned about my future in the industry. During auditions, I received numerous harsh comments like, ‘I doubt you’ll be successful in 4-5 years’.”

The actor explained that upon hearing such comments, he felt motivated to work harder and prove his critics wrong. He refused to let their words discourage him, and instead, he used it as fuel to continue pursuing his goal until the very end.

During a recent interview, Byun Woo-seok shared a heartbreaking experience from his early acting days. He recalled going to a hair salon after a script reading to get a haircut for his character. However, he received a phone call halfway through the haircut informing him that the production team would not be able to work with him. Feeling upset, he left a message in the actors’ group chat, expressing his disappointment and wondering if he was not good enough. This experience deeply hurt his pride and brought him to tears.

Despite the challenges, Byun Woo-seok shared that the difficult moment served as a motivation for him to improve his acting skills and become a more hardworking individual. He also acknowledged that similar situations may arise in the future, which is why he took on various roles, including small characters and those with only a few lines, in order to prevent it from happening again. His determination was evident as he worked on 10 projects within a year, which proved to be a tough but ultimately rewarding experience that helped him grow as an actor.
