The Asian Star Awards vote for the Seoul International Drama Awards took place from June 15th to July 14th. Byun Woo-seok, known for his role in “Lovely Runner”, was voted No.1 in the Korean Men’s Popularity Award category with 49.53% of the vote. His co-star, Kim Hye-yoon, also claimed the top spot for female stars with 51.07% of the vote, solidifying the overwhelming popularity of “Lovely Runner”.
On the 15th, Byun Woo-seok expressed his appreciation to fans through an open chatroom that he frequently uses to interact with them. However, his comment has sparked additional backlash due to the ongoing controversy surrounding his excessive security measures.
On the 12th, Byun Woo-seok arrived at Incheon International Airport to depart for his Hong Kong fanmeeting. However, a video surfaced, showing Byun Woo-seok’s bodyguard using flashlights to protect the actor from oncoming airport passengers, sparking controversy.
Witnesses at the airport reported that Byun Woo-seok’s bodyguards went as far as checking passengers’ tickets in the lounge in an attempt to control the airport. The incident sparked a complaint from a netizen to the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, citing concerns of excessive security. Ultimately, Varo Entertainment, Byun Woo-seok’s agency, issued an official apology on the 15th in response to the incident.
Despite the apology, the controversy surrounding Byun Woo-seok has not subsided. As a result, all eyes are on his agency to see how they will handle and make amends for the situation.
