Call of Duty Fans Concerned About Potential Shutdown of H2M Mod as Sales Surge

Despite Activision’s past record of shutting down fan-made projects, Call of Duty fans are worried that H2M will meet the same fate.

H2M is an upcoming fan project that aims to recreate the multiplayer experience of Modern Warfare 2 (2009). Developed on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, it faithfully recreates all of the iconic maps and weapons from the original game.

Prior to the scheduled August 16 release, select content creators were granted advance access. This resulted in a significant surge of excitement after impressive gameplay footage was revealed.

As luck would have it, Modern Warfare Remastered is currently on sale for half its original price on Steam, which contributed to its ranking as the third best-selling game on the platform before the mod was released.

Despite the excitement, past precedents set by Activision have shown that there is a valid reason for concern about the future of the project, which was also shared on Twitter.

In May 2023, the CoD community was taken aback when Activision issued a cease-and-desist letter to the Sm2 developers, who had devoted more than a year to developing a free-to-play mod using the MW2019 engine.

During that same month, Activision also compelled X Labs to cease operations as it was responsible for running servers for past games like Black Ops 3.

Experienced individuals are well aware of the potential consequences of a split-second decision and therefore exercise caution.

“One player responded that they would not purchase it until its launch, in case it gets shut down.”

“I don’t understand why people bother making these. In my experience, they never seem to last more than two weeks,”chimed in another user.

A few days before the release of H2M, Activision’s sudden decision to reduce the price of Modern Warfare Remastered by half during a Steam sale raised doubts about their motives.

“According to a third commentator, Activision’s current silence may be due to their strategy of promoting sales for MWR on Steam before ultimately taking down the mod after its release.”
