Capcom reveals 1994 Street Fighter movie still makes “tens of millions” per year

During a shareholder’s meeting on June 20th, it was announced by Capcom that their 1994 film adaptation of Street Fighter, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme, continues to generate millions of yen in revenue annually.

The iconic video game adaptation, known for being so bad it’s good, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. As Capcom begins production on the upcoming Street Fighter film with Legendary, they have also unveiled some surprising details about the previous installment.

Nearly three decades later, the original live-action Street Fighter film still proves to be a profitable investment for Capcom, as stated by the company during a recent shareholder meeting.

According to the translated notes taken by an attendee at the meeting, the ’94 film continues to generate tens of millions of yen in revenue each year.

It should be noted that the Yen differs greatly from the Dollar, which may not be apparent to Western fans. While tens of millions of Yen may seem like a substantial amount, it actually converts to hundreds of thousands of dollars. We cannot determine the equivalent in Bison bucks, but this is certainly an intriguing anomaly.

The participant asserted that the information was presented as an illustration of “how to profit from intellectual property”during conversations about the Onimusha anime’s release on Netflix in 2023.

In April of the same year, news broke that Legendary had obtained the rights for a Street Fighter movie and TV show. The project was slated to be helmed by the twin directors of ‘Talk to Me’, Daniel and Michael Philippou.

Despite reports from Capcom wanting to begin work on the film sooner rather than later, the directorial duo has been lost due to scheduling conflicts as of June 2024.

With recent moves to capitalize on its intellectual properties, such as the upcoming Street Fighter film, the Onimusha Netflix adaptation, and the live-action and animated Resident Evil adaptations on the popular streaming platform, it seems that Capcom is eager to join the trend of turning video games into Hollywood productions.

Capcom says its 1994 Street Fighter II movie continues to rake in profits nearly 30 years later.

The 1994 Street Fighter II movie featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, the late Raul Julia as M. Bison, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li from Mulan, and Wes Studi as Sagat from Avatar.

Despite its reputation for being campy and featuring cheesy acting, the film has become a beloved favorite among fans of fighting games. This is evidenced by its continued success and enduring popularity, even 30 years after its release.
