Capcom’s Dream of Producing More Marvel Crossover Games

Capcom’s Dream of Producing More Marvel Crossover Games

In June of 2024, Capcom surprised and delighted the fighting game community by announcing a collection of its classic Marvel vs Capcom games for modern consoles.

The announcement caused a stir on Twitter as fans celebrated the attention ‘Mahvel’ was receiving. Longtime followers of the franchise were thrilled at the opportunity to play classic titles on modern hardware.

Naturally, this announcement sparked the question that many fans have been asking: Is there a possibility of another Marvel vs Capcom game in the works? We had the opportunity to pose this question to the producer of the collection, Shuhei Matsumoto, and his response filled us with optimism.

He mentioned that the development team at Capcom has grand aspirations, such as the possibility of creating a new Marvel vs Capcom game or a new game featuring Capcom and SNK characters.

While I am uncertain, it would require a significant amount of time and effort to develop and release these types of games. However, for the time being, our focus is on reintroducing these beloved legacy games to a new audience. This will allow individuals who may not have access to them, due to them not being available on modern platforms, the opportunity to experience them.

“We can currently demonstrate the existence of these series and express our love for them. We also hope that you share our enthusiasm and that in the future, as these series become more well-known, there may be potential for larger game developments.”

In addition, we asked Matsumoto about any potential plans for UMvC3, as the game has garnered a dedicated following of passionate fans over the past fourteen years (many of whom strongly desire rollback netcode).

The team is passionate about Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and other past fighting games that may not have rollback support or are not currently available on a modern platform. We have many plans and aspirations, but it all comes down to timing and taking things one step at a time. We are excited for what the future holds and are determined to make our dreams a reality.

Naturally, numerous players were ecstatic that this compilation was brought to fruition. We inquired about the process behind it and the discussions that took place between Capcom and Marvel (currently owned by Disney) in order to create this gratifying offering for the fighting game community.

Despite the fact that the most active games in the series are over a decade old, Matsumoto surprised us by revealing that Marvel is still very much aware of the vibrant community of MvC players and continues to pay attention to competitive tournaments.

Matsumoto stated that there was mutual enthusiasm from both parties to make this collection a reality. From our discussion, it appears that potential future projects will depend on the overall interest of players in this compilation of arcade classics.

“For many years, myself and the team have been eager to re-release this Capcom-developed Marvel title. The timing and cooperation of all parties involved has been crucial in making this a reality. Our discussions with Marvel have been ongoing for years, and we are grateful to finally be able to make it happen.”

The stars were aligned when they joined our team, making it possible for us to finally bring our vision to life. We are all filled with excitement and some of our inspiration for this project came from Marvel’s recognition of community-based tournaments, such as EVO.

“As Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and other Marvel tournaments continue to take place, it is clear that there is a strong demand for these games to be accessible on modern platforms. This presents a unique opportunity for them to fulfill the wishes of fans and make these games available.”
