The decision to portray Sabra as a Black Widow is intriguing. It allows her to be a part of the superhero conversation in the MCU while preserving her original backstory, which was a concern for many fans prior to her introduction on the big screen.
Sabra, an Israeli superheroine, has been around since the 1980s, initially as a foe of The Incredible Hulk. She is unique in that she is a mutant who possesses exceptional endurance and the power to bestow superhuman abilities upon others.
Despite being a member of the Israeli Secret Service, which has sparked controversy, she was also cast as a character by writer Waleed F. Mahdi who described her as “insensitive and disgraceful.”However, the decision to change the character to a Black Widow may ease some of these concerns, though not all.
Despite the problematic assassin background of the character, the comics have received criticism for their portrayal of Israeli stereotypes through Sabra’s story and interactions with other Israelis.
