Since its release on December 13, 2024, Carry-On has emerged as a blockbuster success for Netflix, raising the possibility of a sequel. However, the film’s director, Jaume Collet-Serra, emphasizes that any future installment hinges on its reception among a specific audience segment.
Carry-On captivates viewers with its engaging action-packed narrative set during the Christmas season, reminiscent of the iconic Die Hard franchise. In our review of the film, we noted, “TJ Fixman’s script is as professional, ruthless, and efficient as the villain around which his story revolves.”
Potential for a Carry-On Sequel: A Family Affair?
In a recent conversation with Variety, Collet-Serra revealed, “We don’t have any plans for a sequel. But if audiences wanted a sequel, families wanted a sequel, and if we had an idea that would spark and live up to the original maybe we would do something. But right now, there are no plans.” This sentiment highlights the importance of viewer interest in shaping the future of the franchise.
Producer Dylan Clark also contributed to the discussion, stating that while there are no definitive plans in place, the possibilities remain open. “There are no plans, but it’s fun to quietly talk about these things. These characters are great. Look at Danielle Deadwyler’s character, [detective Elena Cole], you can see a world in which there’s a movie about her,” he mentioned.
Despite the cautious stance of the director and producer, the overwhelming success of Carry-On suggests a sequel may be inevitable. The film has amassed an impressive 149.5 million views in just one month, positioning it as Netflix’s fifth most-watched English-language film, following Red Notice, Don’t Look Up, The Adam Project, and Bird Box.
Star Taron Egerton has also expressed enthusiasm for a continuation of the story, remarking, “To be honest, until this morning, I hadn’t really thought about it, because the movie’s so lightning striking in one place, but I guess that never stopped Die Hard. I think it turned out great, and I am open to anything and everything. I’m still the guy who thinks every job is his last. You say sequel and my tail pricks up.”
