The Controversy Surrounding “The Queen Who Crowns”: A Look into Its Explicit Scenes

As filming commenced, actors discovered the extent of the nudity included in the series, which was elevated with the assistance of computer graphics (CG) and body doubles. The first two episodes, airing on both cable network tvN and the OTT platform TVING, showcased bold nudity and intimate encounters between lead stars Cha Joo-young and Lee Yi-dam. Notably, tvN opted to edit certain explicit segments to comply with a 15+ rating, while TVING presented the unedited versions, earning a 19+ rating. This editing decision led to strong audience reactions, with some viewers labeling the series an “erotic drama,”voicing discomfort about watching it with family.

The production team’s approach to nudity during filming raised questions. According to reports, the initial script described intimate moments but lacked explicit references to nudity. However, during the storyboard meetings, a push for increased nudity was evidently made, emphasizing its significance for the narrative.

Additionally, it was disclosed that the bodies portrayed in these intimate scenes were not the lead actors’, but rather body doubles. Cha Joo-young and Lee Yi-dam performed while clothed, with CG technology merging the faces of the leads with the body doubles.

Prior to the series airing, the agencies representing Cha Joo-young and Lee Yi-dam requested careful editing of the explicit scenes; however, the production team allegedly refused, insisting that the scenes were critical to the storytelling.

Addressing these claims, director Kim Sang-ho clarified that the heightened level of explicitness was not a decision made by the production team but was rather a requirement set forth by the broadcasting channel. He expressed caution, stating, “I don’t think I can speak directly about this matter.”
