Chainsaw Man Chapter 172 Recap: Who is the Ear Devil?

In the most recent installment of Chainsaw Man, Denji, transformed into the Hero of Hell, faces off against special divisions 5 and 6. The recently restructured special division 5 now includes the Ear Devil, summoned specifically to defeat the Chainsaw Man.

In the previous chapter, 171 of Chainsaw Man, it was suggested that the Chainsaw Devil possessed the power to eliminate things from existence. The requirements for Denji to successfully transform into Chainsaw Man were also unveiled, and the chapter ended with a disturbing climax. Now, the connection between all of this and the Ear Devil will be explored, along with the permanent impact it has on the destiny of humanity.

Who is the Ear Devil

Special Division 5 summoned the Ear Devil with the purpose of defeating the Chainsaw Devil, as it is known to represent the terror associated with ears.

The devil’s body is characterized by a lack of many facial features, with the exception of a wide open mouth and large ears.

Chapter 172 of Chainsaw Man

Upon receiving the command to restrain Chainsaw Man, Special Division 5 was swiftly and brutally dismembered by the powerful entity.

After that, Division 6 encountered Denji as well. At that moment, the centipede was able to inflict a brief injury on Chainsaw Man. Subsequently, Denji sliced the centipede and all the members of Division 6 into pieces.

Following this, Chainsaw Man impales all of their severed heads and proceeds to devour the Ear Devil. The focus then shifts to Katana Man and War Devil Yoru engaging in a discussion about Chainsaw Man, during which their ears inexplicably vanish.

Implications of the Ear Devil’s Consumption by Pochita

Due to its ability to erase objects and ideas from existence, when Chainsaw Man devoured the Ear Devil, the concept of ears was eradicated. As a result, everyone lost their ears, causing them to become deaf.

It is quite absurd to imagine the rest of the series proceeding without any characters being able to communicate with each other due to the absence of ears. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that this effect can be reversed.

Prior to this, there had been an occasion in which the War Devil Yoru had made a vow to force Pochita to expel the idea of nuclear weapons. Given this commitment, the unexpected loss of ears should heighten the importance of retrieving stolen concepts from Pochita’s stomach in the manga.
