How to Access the Command Console in Dragon Age: Origins
While many gamers learned about command consoles through titles like The Sims, Dragon Age: Origins requires a bit more setup to access the command console properly.
Step 1: Create a Shortcut for Quick Access
To begin, you should create a shortcut for the game’s executable file on your desktop. Follow these steps:
- Locate the executable. Head to your Dragon Age installation folder. By default, it is typically found here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe
- Create a shortcut. Right-click the
daorigins.exe
file and select “Create Shortcut.”Move this shortcut to your desktop. - Enable the developer console. Right-click the desktop shortcut, select “Properties,”and in the Target field, append
-enabledeveloperconsole
at the end, after the quotation marks. The line should resemble:"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age\bin_ship\daorigins.exe"-enabledeveloperconsole
- Apply your changes. Click “Apply,”then “OK”to close the properties window.
Step 2: Configure Your Keybindings
With the developer console enabled, let’s assign a key to open it:
- Locate the keybindings file. Navigate to
Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\Settings\
and open thekeybindings.ini
file with a text editor (Notepad is sufficient). - Find the console line. Look for this line:
OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_GRAVE
(The GRAVE key refers to the~
key by default). - Select your key. If the
GRAVE
key doesn’t suit you or is already in use, changeButton_GRAVE
to any key of your choice. Just ensure it is not already mapped to another action in the game.
Step 3: Launch the Game
Now, start Dragon Age: Origins using your newly created shortcut:
- Start with the shortcut. Always launch the game using the shortcut you created on your desktop (which contains “
-enabledeveloperconsole
“in the target). - Open the console. Inside the game, press the key assigned earlier (or the default key) to access the console. You won’t see a window pop up, nor will you see what you’re typing — this is normal.
- Input your command. You can now type any of the commands from the table above that you wish to try. Enjoy!
