Chef Kim Do-yoon Explains His Decision on Culinary Class Wars at ‘Mashimaro’

Chef Kim Do-yoon, popularly referred to as the “Mashimaro Chef,” recently disclosed the motivation behind wearing a headset during his appearance on Netflix’s culinary competition, Culinary Class Wars. This insight was shared during an episode of Channel A’s variety show, Dad is a Flower Dad, which aired on October 10.

Throughout his participation in Culinary Class Wars, Chef Kim donned a headset while he cooked. He clarified, “The headset helped me put love into my dishes and concentrate better on my culinary tasks. I enjoyed listening to tracks by Jia and Yangpa.” Moreover, he mentioned that the filming environment was quite noisy, which heightened his anxiety, prompting him to wear the headset for relaxation.

When Kim Gu-ra remarked on his early elimination from the show Black & White Chef, Chef Kim playfully replied, “I entered the competition because my girlfriend encouraged me to. She didn’t mention anything about winning the prize money.”

In a lighthearted moment, Chef Kim humorously noted his likeness to the playful rabbit character Mashimaro and mentioned that he shares an eye smile with singer Lee Hyori. He also shared that he hails from Gangnam’s prestigious education district, although his career choice as a chef initially faced disapproval from his parents.

Despite being a Michelin 1-star chef, Kim Do-yoon experienced an early exit in the second round of Culinary Class Wars.

Culinary Class Wars features a contest where talented yet lesser-known chefs, dubbed “black spoon” chefs, compete against South Korea’s elite star chefs, known as “white spoon” chefs. Chef Kim participated as one of 20 white spoon chefs but was unfortunate to lose against a side dish chef. The competition wrapped up with its twelfth episode, which aired on October 8.

On another note, Channel A’s Dad is a Flower Dad showcases the everyday experiences of middle-aged fathers, airing every Thursday at 9:30 PM.
