Recently, Chinese astronauts reached a remarkable milestone by cooking chicken wings and steak aboard the China Space Station using a newly introduced oven. This development signifies a major advancement in the culinary capabilities for long-duration missions in space.
The Astronaut Center of China (ACC) has shared video footage showcasing crew members from the Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 missions as they grilled food for approximately 28 minutes before coming together to enjoy a meal. This oven installation is part of ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions for astronauts stationed in orbit.
According to the ACC, the innovative oven has been specifically engineered to allow taikonauts to enjoy freshly prepared meals. It operates using smokeless, oil-free baking techniques that adhere to the station’s stringent air quality regulations. Furthermore, the unit has successfully passed rigorous tests for temperature control, residue collection, and high-temperature filtration, ensuring it is ready for up to 500 cooking cycles.
Prior attempts at cooking in space have included previous experiments, such as the baking of chocolate chip cookies on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2020. Unlike the ISS prototype, which was primarily devised for experimental activities, the Chinese oven offers significantly quicker cooking times and is geared towards daily culinary use.
Enhancing Culinary Options in Space
The ACC reports a substantial increase in food choices for the Shenzhou-21 mission, with an impressive selection of 190 items now available. This diverse menu includes fresh vegetables, cakes, nuts, and various types of meat, all of which are suitable for cooking and baking in space.
The Shenzhou-20 crew is scheduled to return to Earth on November 5, transitioning the control of the station to the Shenzhou-21 team, thereby continuing the legacy of Chinese advancements in space exploration.
In a broader context, NASA is currently under scrutiny from lawmakers and scientists regarding the release of data pertaining to the 3I/ATLAS interstellar object, especially after the acting administrator responded to a query from Kim Kardashian on social media platform X.
