Choi Jae-rim Under Fire Again for “Overlapping Roles”: Health Deteriorates, Resulting in Show Cancellation

Unexpected Cancellation of Cyrano Performance

On December 20, RG Company and CJ ENM, the production companies behind the musical
Cyrano, announced via their official social media accounts that the actor
Choi Jae-rim, who portrays Cyrano, would be unable to perform in the
2:30 PM (KST) show due to health issues. The news came as a surprise to both audiences
and the cast.

In their statement, the companies extended their sincerest apologies to ticket holders,
explaining, “We sincerely apologize to the audience who purchased tickets and came to see
the show for the inconvenience caused by this sudden cancellation.” To mitigate the impact,
they assured patrons that refunds would be processed at 110% of the original ticket price.

The production companies further stated, “We wish for Choi Jae-rim’s speedy recovery and
once again apologize for the sudden cancellation. We kindly ask for your understanding.”

Performance Issues During the Show

Earlier that day, it was reported that Choi Jae-rim had shown signs of distress during the
2:30 PM performance. Observers noted that he struggled with high notes and experienced
difficulties delivering even basic lines, as his voice cracked consistently. Given these
circumstances, the decision was made to cancel the remainder of the performance before the
second act commenced—to prioritize the actor’s health.

Cyrano: A Rich Theatrical Heritage

Cyrano, which premiered on October 6, is an adaptation of a classic play
by French poet and playwright Edmond Rostand, inspired by a historical figure. The
narrative unfolds in 17th-century France, focusing on Cyrano, a noble leader of the Gascon Cadets
during the Spanish War, exploring themes of love, honor, and inner beauty.

Concerns Over Choi Jae-rim’s Workload

Choi Jae-rim’s role as Cyrano has raised concerns about his health, especially considering his
demanding schedule. Even before the production’s debut, observers had noted that his rigorous
commitments in various productions could take a toll. Previously, in January, he had tested positive
for COVID-19, which necessitated cast substitutions in his roles for Les Misérables and
The Phantom of the Opera. At that time, his deteriorating health was largely attributed
to the strain of balancing overlapping roles.

Despite this earlier setback, Choi is currently engaged in several productions, including
Chicago, Kinky Boots (in provincial performances), and Cyrano,
raising further concerns about the sustainability of his workload and health.
