During the October 30 episode of YTN News FM’s “Smart Radio Life,”attorney Lee Go-eun examined the recent controversies surrounding Choi Min-hwan.
Lee scrutinized the audio clips provided by Yulhee, indicating that they primarily capture Choi Min-hwan’s requests for hotel accommodations rather than explicit solicitations for escort services. Nevertheless, the fact that he prioritized these arrangements over family time raises serious moral issues.
She emphasized that hiring performers at venues is permitted, and their presence does not inherently suggest illicit behavior. For an act to be deemed prostitution, there must be a monetary exchange for sexual intercourse, and while such encounters may occur in hotel settings, this alone does not constitute definitive evidence of wrongdoing.
The lawyer expressed significant skepticism around the possibility of prostitution, highlighting the large sums mentioned in Telegram messages, mentioning that phrases like “TC”correspond to fees for companionship. The suggestion of costs exceeding 2 million won (approximately 1,480 USD) raised alarms about the nature of the services discussed, though establishing a direct link to prostitution based solely on these recordings remains difficult.
For Choi Min-hwan to be charged, concrete evidence is necessary. Although visiting a venue might lead to attempts at solicitation, there lacks a legal term for “attempted prostitution,” making statements alone insufficient for prosecution.
The recordings implied that Choi Min-hwan was quite knowledgeable about nightlife, suggesting previous involvement. Lee posited that even if this is his first alleged offense, he might not benefit from a suspended indictment and could face fines or more severe consequences.
Choi Min-hwan and Yulhee were married in 2018 and share three children, but they announced their divorce in December of last year, with Choi being granted custody.
Recently, Yulhee took to her YouTube channel to share the reasons behind their split, stating that she was caught off guard by Choi Min-hwan’s discussions with staff from entertainment venues regarding escort and hotel arrangements. She mentioned that this information shed light on the troubling experiences she had encountered.
In response to these allegations, Choi Min-hwan withdrew from the KBS 2TV show “The Return of Superman”and paused his public engagements. As a result, F.T.Island continued operating as a duo, with a session musician temporarily assuming Choi Min-hwan’s drumming responsibilities.
