Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl offers players a variety of pivotal choices that shape the narrative, with some decisions carrying significant weight. One such choice arises during the “Needle in a Haystack”mission, where you must track down Squint, who possesses valuable items critical to your journey.
Squint, a Stalker and associate of Richter, has gone missing with Ward Sensors that both Captain Zotov of The Ward and Richter are eager to recover. Upon locating Squint, you must decide how to handle the situation and whom to ultimately give the Ward Sensors to, paving the way for various possible interactions.
Your quest will lead you to the windmill where Squint is hiding, following a series of misleading clues. This derelict structure, found near an old farm, is fraught with danger, including numerous tripwires placed strategically as you ascend the stairs to confront him.
Option 1: Eliminate Squint On Sight
One immediate choice available is to confront Squint with lethal force. While it may seem amusing in the heat of the moment, this is undoubtedly the least favorable decision. By killing Squint, you will miss out on the opportunity to engage with Richter regarding the Ward Sensors and will only have Captain Zotov as your remaining option.
Moreover, eliminating Squint bars access to the useful Piece of Cake side quest. Unless your strategy involves chaos for chaos’s sake, it’s generally advisable to spare him for the time being.
Option 2: Retrieve an Artifact for Squint
A more conventional and narrative-driven choice is to assist Squint by retrieving an artifact in exchange for the Ward Sensors. This option fosters player engagement and leads you to the Piece of Cake quest, where you’ll need to locate a cave entrance nearby.
The main cave entrance is located in the farmhouse. You can access it by dropping through an enormous hole in the floor. Be sure to switch on your flashlight as you navigate through the dark terrain. The initial cave features a swift, invisible mutant, which means a shotgun is recommended for efficient elimination.
After dealing with the mutant, you’ll enter a second cave plagued by radioactive blight. Using your Echo Sensor, locate the artifact at the center and return to Squint with it. In exchange, he will hand over the Ward Sensors before making a hasty retreat.
Option 3: Obtain the Artifact then Eliminate Squint
Interestingly, the most beneficial strategy for players lies in helping Squint only to betray him later. Agree to assist him and procure the artifact, but once you return to the windmill, inform him that you will be keeping it. This will trigger a confrontation.
Upon defeating Squint, you’ll be able to keep the artifact and loot his belongings, which often include a variety of useful equipment. Remarkably, this choice does not restrict your ability to decide whom to return the Ward Sensors to, as Richter remains unconcerned about his former ally’s demise in this context.
These are the primary options available in the Needle in a Haystack story mission, each offering unique consequences and interactions that enrich your gameplay experience.
