Explaining why Choso’s death in Jujutsu Kaisen is the best conclusion for his character

Despite Choso’s death in chapter 259 of the manga, where he bravely sacrificed himself to protect his brother Yuji Itadori and had a strong familial connection to Kenjaku through their Cursed Womb bond, fans have expressed strong emotions towards his passing. While it is understandable that many will mourn his loss, claiming that this outcome was not fitting for his character may be a misinterpretation of his development throughout the series.

In the manga, Choso was motivated by his determination to seek revenge or defend his brothers, particularly Yuji, even if it meant blaming himself for not being a better older sibling. In the Culling Games arc, he confronted Kenjaku in order to avenge his brothers, who were manipulated by him, and has been a crucial ally for Yuji in their ongoing battle against Ryomen Sukuna.

The fact that Choso meets his end while protecting Yuji is in perfect alignment with his character, as he has always put his family’s well-being above his own. This pivotal moment was brilliantly crafted by author Gege Akutami, giving Choso ample screen time and character growth before his death, a feat that cannot be said for many other characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

At first, Choso was introduced as an enemy in the series, as he joined forces with Kenjaku to seek revenge for his Cursed Womb siblings who were killed by Yuji and Nobara Kugisaki. However, during the Shibuya Incident arc, their encounter revealed Choso’s familial ties to them through Kenjaku. This caused him to change sides and assist the sorcerers in the Culling Games arc.

After the events in Shibuya, Choso shifted into a role of supporting Yuji, providing aid in various situations. For example, he played a vital part in the fight against Kenjaku alongside Yuki Tsukumo and has played a significant role in the current arc by helping train his brother and facing off against Sukuna. Tragically, Choso gave up his own life to shield Yuji from Sukuna’s Fire Arrow.

Final Thoughts

It was clear that Choso’s death was in line with his character development in Jujutsu Kaisen, as he consistently put his brothers’ safety above his own throughout his entire journey.
