Chris Evans appears poised to don the iconic star-spangled costume of Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America, once again.
According to a report from The Wrap, although there has been no official confirmation yet, Evans is expected to return in the much-anticipated Marvel film, Avengers Doomsday. This revelation has sparked a mix of excitement and confusion among fans.
You might recall that the last time audiences saw Steve Rogers, he seemed more suited for a retirement community than leading the Avengers—making one wonder: How can the First Avenger make his triumphant return?
In comic book lore, Steve Rogers has never allowed his advanced age to hinder his commitment to justice. However, it’s crucial to understand how his character will be utilized in the upcoming film.
A Well-Deserved Break for Cap
The film is being helmed by the Russo Brothers, along with screenwriter Stephen McFeely, who are returning after their previous projects. Their involvement is significant because they were instrumental in aging Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, providing him with a proper narrative closure and enabling him to enjoy a peaceful life.
This pivotal moment, along with the fate of Tony Stark, stands as one of the Russo’s most notable contributions to contemporary pop culture. The big question remains: Will they compromise their legacy by reintroducing Steve Rogers into the fray? To borrow a line from Captain America himself, I believe they won’t. Reviving Rogers would be akin to desecrating a masterpiece, albeit a less important one.
So, how can Captain America return? The answer lies within the multiverse. The prevailing theory is that Chris Evans will portray a variant of Captain America from an alternate universe where Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom, resides.

Marvel originally intended to center this storyline around the villain Kang; however, circumstances led to a pivot in focus towards Doctor Doom. This quick adaptation means there’s limited time to develop Doom’s background and motivations as a formidable antagonist.
A strategic flashback featuring this alternate version of Tony Stark with his Captain America (with Evans suited up) could effectively establish the stakes and emotional weight of this alternate reality. Perhaps on Doom’s Earth, Captain America perished during the Chitauri invasion, prompting Tony’s descent into villainy. Alternatively, we might witness a twisted version where Tony ultimately causes Steve’s demise. The specifics are yet to unfold.
While I can’t predict the precise narrative direction, I’m confident that Steve Rogers’ involvement will be primarily through Doom’s flashbacks—at least for this film. However, the future storylines, particularly regarding Secret Wars, remain open to interpretation.
