Christopher Nolan’s canceled movie with Jim Carrey sounds incredible

Although Christopher Nolan has collaborated with several of the most talented actors of any era, he was close to teaming up with yet another iconic figure: Jim Carrey.

Despite announcing his retirement, Jim Carrey seems to have no objections to reprising his role as Doctor Robotnik in another family-friendly adventure. He will be returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, marking his first acting project since 2022’s Sonic 2.

Despite initially being recognized as one of the top comedic actors of the ’90s, Carrey’s career has been consistently prolific. His performances in The Truman Show, The Number 27, and Man on the Moon helped establish him as a talented dramatic actor.

However, he came close to landing a role in a movie by Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan. This fact was brought to fans’ attention when the Twitter account Christopher Nolan Art & Updates shared a post discussing the abandoned project.

Famed director Christopher Nolan very nearly directed a Howard Hughes biopic starring Jim Carrey.

Nolan had actually disclosed his unsuccessful project during a 2023 interview with Variety, which was shortly after Oppenheimer’s disappointing performance at the box office. In the early 2000s, Nolan had a strong interest in creating a biopic about Howard Hughes and was considering Carrey for the lead role.

Regrettably, just as Nolan was completing the screenplay, production for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator had already begun.

In order to avoid competing with Scorsese’s project, Nolan decided to abandon the film. As a result, he now waits for a movie to be approved before writing a script.

Despite the disappointment, we have witnessed Carrey fully commit to his roles as an actor. His performance as the reclusive Hughes had the potential to be extraordinary. Carrey’s legendary portrayal of Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon showcases his ability to transform into a struggling and tormented character, and he has taken on numerous roles where he delves into the depths of a broken soul.

It is possible that Nolan’s next theatrical release will be a re-release of Interstellar to commemorate its anniversary, as long as the film reels can be located. Meanwhile, Carrey is set to star in Sonic 3, which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2024.
