Preparations for ‘Wicked Part 1’ Premiere Spark Controversy Over Singing in Theaters
As the anticipation builds for the US premiere of Wicked Part 1 on November 22, some theaters are bracing themselves for a unique challenge: enthusiastic audiences eager to sing along.
In a widely shared social media post, a cinema in the Philippines has issued an official plea to moviegoers planning to attend the film, emphasizing the importance of an enjoyable experience for all. The notice calls for attendees to “allow everyone to enjoy the cinema experience”and requests that they refrain from singing during the film.

This warning reflects a broader concern, as AMC Theatres in the United States has also addressed the situation. They shared that the preshow content for Wicked aims to remind audiences to respect the viewing experience of others and not disrupt the movie.
Unsurprisingly, fans of musical theater have expressed their dissatisfaction with these reminders. Comments on social media include reactions such as, “What do you mean I can’t sing during the movie?!!!” with others predicting potential conflicts arising from enthusiastic viewers who consider themselves the next Idina Menzel.

One frustrated viewer recalled their experience in Brazil, where they encountered a fellow audience member singing softly along to every song. They expressed hope for a more peaceful screening when attending again. Additionally, a fabricated Instagram story purportedly from Ariana Grande encouraging others to remain silent has circulated, humorously adding to the conversation.
The fictional message proclaims: “If you feel the urge to sing, please wait until the film is available for home purchase.” Despite not actually being posted by Grande, the fake message resonated with many fans.
However, all is not lost for singing enthusiasts. Special sing-along screenings are being planned for those who can’t contain their vocal performances, which are expected to take place internationally, beginning December 25 in approximately 1,000 North American theaters. Exact locations and times for these screenings are yet to be confirmed, but eager fans will soon have opportunities to belt out their favorite tunes from the musical.
With Wicked Part 1 set to be released globally on November 22, audiences can prepare for an exciting cinematic journey while keeping their singing in check—at least for the first viewing! For more details, including runtime and age rating, stay tuned.
