Classic Anime Alert: Crunchyroll Now Streaming 1981’s ‘Urusei Yatsura’

How about replacing the looping Lum clip in the City Pop YouTube video with something more traditional?

The Urusei Yatsura anime, which is adapted from Rumiko Takahashi’s comedic manga, can now be streamed on Crunchyroll. It originally aired in Japan from 1981 to 1986, and all 194 episodes are currently accessible with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

The tale begins with an extraterrestrial attack endangering Earth. In response, a random human named Ataru Moroboshi is chosen to engage in a duel with the aliens in order to protect the planet.

Although he was hesitant, Ataru, a lethargic high school student, eventually agrees. His mission? To catch Lum, a striking alien princess donning a tiger-stripe bikini, in a game of tag. However, it proves to be quite a challenge as Lum possesses the ability to fly and shock others with electricity. After successfully capturing her, Ataru is taken aback when Lum declares him her “darling”and reveals that she has no intention of leaving Earth anytime soon.

The revival of this classic will be a truly incredible experience.

What is Urusei Yatsura

Rumiko Takahashi’s manga series, Urusei Yatsura, was published from 1978 to 1987 and consists of 374 chapters. Its anime adaptation, which aired from 1981 to 1986, had a total of 195 episodes. In October 2022, a new anime adaptation featuring selected stories began airing.

In the series, an alien humanoid race invades Earth and offers to leave the planet unharmed if the protagonist is able to defeat them in a game of tag. Ataru successfully defeats the alien girl, Lum, and the aliens honor their agreement by leaving Earth.

Lum mistakenly believes that Ataru has proposed marriage, leading to her moving in with him and enrolling in his high school. Ataru’s knack for attracting trouble causes him to frequently find himself in bizarre predicaments.
