Deadpool continues to break box office records, and now he is poised to break yet another record: most valuable cover art.
Deadpool and Wolverine are setting a new standard for box office success, surpassing records and even being compared to “bigger than Jesus.”However, the charismatic anti-hero is expanding his horizons and is now heading to the auction block for his next big venture.
The original artwork for the debut of Deadpool in New Mutants #98, drawn and inked by its creator Rob Liefeld, is now up for auction at Heritage Auctions. The starting bid for this piece is $7.5 million.
If the price makes your eyes bulge, it should, as this cover featuring the first appearance of Deadpool is set to become the most valuable piece of comic art ever sold at auction if it sells for the asking price.

Heritage has held numerous notable comic book art auctions, including the record-breaking sale of an original Eerie #23 cover painted by renowned artist Frank Frazetta, which fetched a staggering $5.4 million.
The cover of Deadpool would mark Marvel’s most significant inclusion on the list of highest-priced comic art ever sold. In 2012, an auction for Todd McFarlane’s original artwork for Amazing Spider-Man #328’s cover yielded a staggering $657,250.
The first appearance of Deadpool and Domino, as well as the revelation of Cable’s true identity as the son of Cyclops and Jean Grey, were all significant moments in the landmark Marvel Comics issue, New Mutants #98.
Furthermore, this marks the start of the end for that volume, as it would be relaunched as the Cable-centric X-Force just three issues later due to the rising popularity of the characters.
Heritage Auctions is a well-known auction house specializing in pop culture collectibles. In April 2024, they held an auction for an Action Comics #1 issue, which has since become the most valuable comic in existence.
