On November 14, shortly before the 2025 Call of Duty League season begins, the Vegas Falcons made a significant announcement: they have appointed Call of Duty veteran James ‘Clayster’ Eubanks to their coaching staff. For Clayster, a three-time world champion, this move could be the ideal start to his coaching career following retirement.
Clayster officially stepped away from competitive gaming on October 23 and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished players in Call of Duty history, standing alongside legends like Ian ‘Crimsix’ Porter and Seth ‘Scump’ Abner.
In the wake of his retirement, many speculated about Clayster’s next steps. He had spent recent years serving as a desk analyst at various events he couldn’t compete in and appeared to be a natural in front of the camera. This led to assumptions that he might continue in an analysis role.
Others speculated he would pivot to content creation, while a few accurately predicted he might pursue a coaching position. However, few anticipated his unique choice to join the Falcons, a newly formed team in the league.
The Falcons, who secured the Vegas Legion CDL spot following the 2024 season, aim to maintain continuity by bringing along their impressive Saudi Arabia-based Challengers roster, which made significant strides in the amateur European circuit last year.
The Path to Improvement
Many have raised eyebrows at Clayster’s decision to join a team that is predicted to be among the lower-tier squads in the league. However, being at the bottom of the standings presents an exceptional opportunity for growth. The Falcons are aware of their underdog status and the greater challenge ahead, which serves as a motivational catalyst.
For Clayster, this scenario offers an excellent platform to build a successful coaching career. With a roster of players eager to embark on their professional journey together, Clayster’s extensive knowledge accumulated over a decade in the competitive arena can significantly influence their development. He has the potential to reshape their individual trajectories within the league.
If he successfully guides the team up the ranks, Clayster could quickly establish himself as a highly sought-after coach in the Call of Duty community. Moreover, with expectations modestly set, the level of pressure he faces is significantly lower compared to joining a powerhouse team like OpTic Texas or Atlanta FaZe.
Forging His Coaching Path
This unique situation allows Clayster to develop his coaching philosophy over time. His challenges as a coach would be magnified if he were to lead a team filled with seasoned winners with whom he had established relationships.
During a recent Twitch stream, Clayster expressed his enthusiasm about coaching players who may not know him well but respect his accomplishments. “They’ll listen to what I say more. But, I have to be more careful with what I say. I need to make sure I’m not just speaking to speak. I need to ensure every word is thoughtful and constructive,” he stated.

Clayster noted he had essentially cultivated a coaching role even during his playing days. However, this new venture offers a distinct and exciting challenge that aligns with his aspirations.
Despite potential criticisms regarding his decision, examining the context reveals that this undertaking could be the perfect fit for his next chapter. As he embarks on this journey, only time will determine if Clayster emerges as one of the elite coaches in the Call of Duty arena.
