In an innovative move to thwart thieves, a Denver couple developed a clever tactic to safeguard their Amazon deliveries after experiencing 40 package thefts from their doorstep. Sarai Vazquez and Martin Jurado aimed to outsmart the criminals—commonly referred to as “porch pirates”—by utilizing fake Amazon packages as decoys.
By placing these decoy packages on their porch, the couple ensured that the thieves would leave empty-handed, as these packages were filled with garbage instead of valuable items. This unexpected twist served to convey a strong message to the would-be criminals.
The Impact of Porch Piracy: A Personal Story
Vazquez and Jurado shared their frustration over the persistent thefts, revealing that they lost approximately 40 packages over time. In an interview, they recounted how deliveries were pilfered almost immediately upon arrival. “It was like within a matter of minutes that we would get our things taken,” Vazquez noted. “We would receive a notification that the package was at our door, only to find it gone when we checked.”
Prior to devising the decoy strategy, the couple attempted to secure their deliveries by purchasing a designated locker. However, the inconvenience of frequently picking up their parcels became overwhelming, prompting them to seek a more creative solution.
Using their ingenious method, Vazquez observed that their household waste significantly diminished, as the porch pirates unknowingly served as a source for their trash elimination. “We don’t even have to pay for trash service anymore at this rate,” she quipped.
Although the couple’s ruse proved effective at reducing theft initially, the thieves eventually caught onto their scheme. After several months, the frequency of the thefts noticeably decreased. “We’re like, ‘Dang, this package has been here a few days, what’s going on?’” Vazquez recalled. “It was like three months ago that they just stopped.”
It’s important to note that porch theft is a widespread issue, not limited to just Amazon deliveries. For instance, reports have surfaced regarding DoorDash orders being pilfered from customer doorsteps. Earlier this year, a man gained attention online after documenting his neighbor stealing his food delivery, which resulted in police involvement and potential eviction for the thief.
