Colin Farrell Shares Unusual Insight on The Penguin Costume That Surprised Fans

The Penguin star Colin Farrell shared insights into his extraordinary transformation into the iconic character, which involved a comprehensive bodysuit complete with an additional feature.

Taking place weeks after the storyline of 2022’s The Batman, the first episode of The Penguin is laden with Easter eggs, including a hidden QR code.

The series boasts a variety of characters, each exhibiting distinct styles. However, none stand out more than Farrell, who embodies the Penguin character.

To authentically portray Gotham City’s notorious bird villain, Farrell underwent a significant physical transformation. As he told People Magazine, “I had a bodysuit, so I was basically covered from wrist to ankle. The only parts that were mine were my hands and feet—everything else, including my ears, were prosthetics.”

Farrell continued, “[Mike] Marino is so twisted and brilliant. He was like, ‘I made you a penguin penis.’ I said, ‘Really? They’re not even going to see it. I don’t know if I want to walk on set with a penguin penis.’ He said, ‘No, no, no—dude, it’s detachable, it’s Velcro, and it has a beak at the end.’ So I had a penguin penis.”

Marino, who served as the effects artist for both The Batman and its spinoff, created this unique feature for a specific scene where Oz appears naked.

Farrell expressed his admiration for Marino’s creativity, crediting him with the visionary approach that shaped the series’ portrayal of Oz. “If it wasn’t for Mike’s design, I’m telling you now, if it was just me with a f**king cigarette and a top hat and a bit of a limp with an umbrella that was a machine gun, we wouldn’t have had the HBO show.”

On average, Farrell dedicated roughly three hours per day alongside Marino and the effects team, who meticulously applied up to “seven different pieces, a ball cap, and a wig on top of the ball cap, in addition to sprucing up every pockmark, zit, crease, and scar.”

Despite his praise for Marino’s talents, Farrell expressed reluctance to don the Oz persona again now that the eight-episode story arc has concluded.

“Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] said, ‘Look, if I could find a way that makes sense, would you consider [Season 2]?.’ And I replied, ‘Absolutely,’” Farrell shared during an interview with Total Film. “But when I finished, my thought was, ‘I never want to put that f**king suit and that f**king head on again.’”
