The world of Batman may be dark, but Colin Farrell has an effective strategy for shifting back to a lighter mindset after embodying his Penguin character, Oz Cobb.
When *The Batman* premiered in 2022, few expected an HBO spinoff series to follow. However, *The Penguin*, which debuted this month, presents a gritty drama exploring the criminal underworld of Gotham City.
Set one week after the intense events of Matt Reeves’ superhero film, *The Penguin* showcases Gotham in turmoil and flooding, which provides the ideal environment for Oz to assert his ambitions.
As anticipated, navigating the world of Gotham’s villains and mobsters isn’t a cheerful experience. Thankfully, Farrell balanced his work on *The Penguin* with another project, but he also employed a unique technique to lighten his mood: indulging in Pixar films.
“It was actually a lovely job,” he shared [via AP Entertainment]. “It was optimistic, light, and focused on healing, in stark contrast to *The Penguin*, which delves into themes of damage, darkness, and pessimism. This eight-hour dramatic piece is almost borderline nihilistic, you know? So it was a good antidote.”
“But the best way to return to a familiar state is to engage with family, friends, and nature. I literally started watching Pixar movies. After long days filming *The Penguin*, I would watch *Toy Story* and other Pixar classics to experience something light and uplifting.”
This method proves to be quite clever, and Farrell might use it again while preparing for *The Batman 2*, which is set to revisit Oz. Fortunately, *The Penguin* has been well-received, garnering praise from audiences and a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
