In Silent Hill 2, players can encounter a total of eight distinct endings, each influenced by your choices during the gameplay—some may even be unexpected. This guide details how to achieve every ending in Silent Hill 2, including two newly added endings exclusive to the remake version. Be mindful that spoilers for the entire game are included.
Leave Ending
Regarded as the “good” ending, the Leave Ending is often the first completion achieved. In this conclusion, James finds peace, receiving forgiveness from a vision of Mary and moving on, with Laura possibly joining him on his journey.
To unlock this ending, prioritize your search for Mary over all else. Regularly check Mary’s letter and photo in your inventory, and avoid engaging with Maria when possible. There will be moments when she is in a separate area, so resist the temptation to visit her. Additionally, maintaining your health is crucial for this outcome.
Maria
This is considered one of the game’s “bad” endings, featuring James who leaves Silent Hill with Maria, only for her to exhibit the same symptoms that afflicted Mary. Coldly, James implies that Maria should seek help for her cough, indicating that he has not gained wisdom from his experiences and is likely to repeat his past mistakes.
To reach this conclusion, place Maria as your main focus throughout. Stay close to her during your adventures, visit her multiple times both at the hospital and within the labyrinth. Make sure not to let her take too much damage, and do not examine Mary’s letter or photo. If you encounter a version of Mary instead of Maria as your final adversary, you’re on the right path for this ending.
In Water
This is one of the darkest endings, wherein James fails to move forward or find redemption for having killed Mary, ultimately succumbing by driving into Toluca Lake.
To unlock this ending, engage in reckless behavior. Keep your health low—use health syringes only in dire situations, and wait to consume health drinks until you have taken two or three hits to remain injured.
Additionally, you will obtain a knife from Angela while exploring the Blue Creek Apartments. She offers it to you, hinting at her suicidal intentions. Make sure to check the knife several times throughout your journey to enhance your chances of receiving this ending.
Rebirth
Available solely in New Game+ mode, this ending features James transporting Mary’s body to a cryptic church located in Toluca Lake in hopes of resurrecting her through a mysterious ritual. The outcome remains ambiguous, but given the strange powers of Silent Hill, alongside previous instances in the series, it seems plausible that he might succeed.
To achieve this ending, you must collect four specific items during your gameplay.
- Book of Crimson Ceremony: Located at a grave in the cemetery early in the game, just follow the shoreline to the right.
- White Chrism: Found outside the Baldwin Mansion after exiting Rosewater Park.
- Obsidian Goblet: Discovered inside the Historical Society, near the artwork titled “Misty Day, Remains of Judgement” .
- Book of Lost Memories: Located in the Lost and Found area on the first floor of the Lakeside Hotel.
Once you have secured all these items, simply complete the game as you normally would.
UFO
As one of the two comedic endings, this alternative concludes with James summoning extraterrestrial beings to Silent Hill, alongside an unexpected visitor—James Sunderland from the original installment. He reveals that the James we have navigated through the game is merely a clone and is set to continue the journey himself. Adding to the humor, this ending is presented as a silent film with hand-drawn animations.
This ending can be unlocked exclusively in New Game+. You’ll discover a magazine that contains clues to the necessary steps in Groovy Music, so make sure to visit early in the game for guidance.
First, locate the Blue Gem by breaking a window at the Jewelry Store situated north of Big Jay’s.
Next, venture to specific locations that align with the storyline. When you have the gem, you will hear peculiar, scientific sounds in these areas.
- The rooftop of the Saul Street Apartments
- The pier located in Rosewood Park
- Room 312 within the Lakeside Hotel
At each location, investigate the blue gem in your possession, and observe it glow. After inspecting it in Room 312, the ending will be automatically assigned to you.
Dog
The second comedic ending features James unlocking a door in the hotel to confront the genuine puppet master of Silent Hill—the adorable shiba inu named Mira.
This ending is also exclusive to New Game+. To unlock it, you will need to assemble the dog key, which consists of two pieces.
- In a dog carrier within the pet store’s storage room, located north of Big Jay’s.
- Found in a dog house on Katz Street. Seek out a gate adorned with a bone painting near the Baldwin Mansion to find it.
Combine both parts to create the dog key, then progress through the game until reaching the hotel. Use the dog key to unlock the Observation Room adjacent to Room 312.
Stillness
This is one of the new endings crafted for the remake, exclusively available in New Game+ mode.
During your journey into Silent Hill, you will find a chainsaw near the ranch, allowing you to break windows immediately, bypassing the need for a wooden plank. Use it to smash the windows of a green car just beyond the Auto Repair shop to obtain a new item, the Key of Sorrow.
This key can then be utilized to open a safe located in the Otherworld Hotel. You may need to brute force the code, but there’s a nearby hint to assist you. Upon unlocking the safe, finishing the game will grant you the Stillness Ending, expanding on the In Water ending, this time featuring a vision of Mary in the car with James.
Bliss
The second new ending, also exclusive to New Game+, follows a unique path.
To unlock this ending, proceed to the end of Nathan Avenue close to the Historical Society, where you will discover a safe code. Use this code to access a safe in Pete’s Bowl-o-Rama, which will yield a key. This key can unlock a newly revealed box in the garden of Brookhaven Hospital containing a bottle of PTV, a drug linked to the local White Claudia flower. This potent hallucinogen shared a connection with the drug trade in Silent Hill and was once used in mystical rituals conducted by the Order, a sinister cult prevalent in the area.
To experience this ending, consume the contents of the bottle before inspecting the tape player in Room 312. If you do so, you will encounter an extended version of the tape that omits any reference to Mary’s murder or her sickness. Instead, you witness James placing the camera down, vowing to bring Mary back to Silent Hill, as they continue packing together. When the camera returns to Room 312 in the present, James is noticeably absent, leaving the outcome up for interpretation. Could it be a mere hallucination? Has he refused to accept his actions? Or has he somehow transcended into the videotape to dwell in more joyful times? The interpretation lies in your hands.
