Complete Guide to All Runewords in Diablo 4: Featuring Vessel of Hatred & Usage Tips

Runewords have made their return in Diablo 4 with the new Vessel of Hatred DLC. But how exactly do they function, and what abilities do the different Runes provide?

Veterans of Diablo 2 will remember that Runewords were a key mechanic for acquiring unique abilities. In Diablo 4, every Rune acts as a distinct item that can be fitted into the socket of either weapons or armor. Each Rune contains a specific term, and when multiple Runes are combined within a single piece of equipment, they form unique Runewords, each bestowing special powers.

While experimenting with various Runes can be enjoyable, players often want to understand the benefits of each Runeword combination. That’s why we’ve compiled all the details you need right here.

How to Utilize Runewords?

To effectively use Runewords, you’ll need to combine Runes from two opposing categories: Runes of Ritual and Runes of Invocation. Runes of Ritual are characterized by their glowing yellow symbols, whereas Runes of Invocation bear purple symbols. The yellow Runes guide you in completing specific tasks, while the purple Runes indicate the effects produced by mixing the two types.

For instance, consider a yellow Rune named “Zan” that requests you to activate your Ultimate Skill, while a purple Rune called “Ceh” grants the ability to summon a wolf companion, regardless of whether you play as a Druid.

By combining them, you create the Runeword ZanCeh.

Remember that to activate your Runeword ability, you’ll need a resource referred to as “Offering.” This resource is generated by your Rune of Ritual and consumed when your Rune of Invocation activates its effect. Thus, it’s essential to track your Offering levels—if they deplete, you’ll have to wait for them to regenerate before your Runeword can trigger again.

Some Runes can produce more Offering than they use, allowing for an interesting mechanic where skills can be repeated multiple times without cooldown delays.

Where to Find Runes?

Fortunately, Runes can be discovered throughout the game world, just like other loot items. Our findings indicate that higher difficulty levels tend to yield more drops.

We also observed an enhanced drop rate for Runes during Helltide events, when battling Elite opponents, and while participating in Seasonal or endgame content.
