Complete List of Confirmed and Speculated Weapons in Ghost of Yotei

Ghost of Yotei showcases a thrilling array of lethal weapons, ranging from traditional katanas to the introduction of formidable Matchlock Rifles. Below, we outline every confirmed weapon thus far and what more we might anticipate in the future.

Ghost of Yotei’s announcement trailer emerged as one of the highlight announcements during September’s State of Play. This sequel is set in 1603, over three centuries after the events depicted in Ghost of Tsushima. In addition to a new female protagonist and the Hokkaido landscape, players can look forward to an arsenal of new weapons.

While the precise cuts and techniques of the katana are making a return, several new additions will provide our heroine, Atsu, with unique advantages against her enemies. Several tools used by Jin Sakai are also expected to make an appearance in the upcoming sequel. Here’s a comprehensive list of weapons confirmed for Ghost of Yotei.

All Confirmed Weapons in Ghost of Yotei

Katana

Atsu can seamlessly switch between single-handed and dual-wield stances while employing her katanas.

Much like the titular Ghost, Atsu displays remarkable proficiency with the blade. However, unlike Jin, she is shown wielding dual katanas, reminiscent of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, known for his double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated duels.

The Ghost of Yotei trailer depicts Atsu executing a series of swift attacks to defeat an enemy ronin, highlighting her prowess. Players can expect to toggle between single and dual katana combat, allowing for a distinct approach to each encounter.

Additionally, Jin’s Way of the Flame mythic ability seems to have made a comeback, as we witness an enemy engulfing their katana in flames. The capability to enhance sword strikes with incendiary oil will certainly be advantageous, especially when dual-wielding.

To be honest

Fans can expect the Kusarigama to debut in Ghost of Yotei.

The Kusarigama, another lethal addition, operates by swinging a weighted chain before thrusting the blade at opponents. This versatile weapon can also disarm foes, as the chain can coil around katanas.

Atsu is likely to utilize this weapon to disarm vulnerable enemies, leaving them exposed for a swift katana strike. Although we anticipate it may deal less damage, its rapid speed and mobility will provide a tactical edge.

Tanegashima (Matchlock Rifles)

The inclusion of Matchlock Rifles will enhance Atsu’s weaponry.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, creative director Jason Connell confirmed players will “master firearms alongside melee weapons like the katana.” This marks a significant shift in gameplay, given that Ghost of Tsushima primarily featured bows and blowguns.

While specifics about the types of firearms in Ghost of Yotei remain unclear, we do know that Tanegashima (Matchlock Rifles) will be featured. These ancient weapons were introduced to Japan by the Portuguese Empire in 1543 and were utilized by both samurai and ashigaru foot soldiers during warfare.

Since Atsu’s story unfolds in 1603, the presence of such firearms aligns with the historical context. The announcement trailer offers a fleeting glimpse of a Matchlock Rifle, as Atsu aims at an unseen target.

Given Hokkaido’s wildlife, including brown bears and wolves, having powerful weaponry will certainly aid in survival.

Speculated Returning & New Weapons

Bow

The bow remains essential for stealthy takedowns.

While the Tanegashima may be preferred for engaging heavily-armored foes, both the half bow and longbow will remain the stealth players’ go-to option. Despite the introduction of firearms, bows saw significant use throughout the Edo period. We anticipate that Atsu will have the ability to switch between rifle and bow for various threats in Hokkaido.

Shuriken

The Shuriken was a beloved option in Ghost of Tsushima, perfect for stealthily eliminating enemies and distracting nearby foes. Jin famously utilized them during his castle infiltrations, allowing for swift eliminations.

Considering the first game balanced both stealth and direct combat, it’s reasonable to assume that Shurikens will return in Ghost of Yotei.

Black Powder Bomb

With firearms becoming prevalent in Japan during Atsu’s storyline, the return of the black powder bomb is likely. This explosive is notably effective against clustered enemies, causing devastating damage within its blast radius.

Atsu is expected to be well-acquainted with these explosives, harnessing their destructive capability.

Smoke Bombs

Sometimes, the best strategy in combat is to conceal your intentions.

A fundamental component of every stealth shinobi’s toolkit, smoke bombs are excellent for confusing adversaries and masking one’s actions. In Ghost of Tsushima, smoke bombs proved invaluable, especially when breaching enemy camps. Creating cover when none exists is a tactical approach to combat.

Naginata

According to Senior Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb, the new setting of Ghost of Yotei allows for the introduction of innovative mechanics, gameplay enhancements, and potentially new weapons. One such weapon we could see is the Naginata.

Though its use declined during the Edo period, the Naginata remained in the hands of samurai, ashigaru, warrior monks, and famously, Onna-musha (female warriors). Whether Atsu herself will wield one remains uncertain, but it is plausible she will encounter foes skilled in this weapon type.

We also have a feature discussing why Ghost of Yotei is advantageous without Jin Sakai, so check it out if you’re curious about the absence of the Legendary Ghost in the sequel.
