Eager to enhance his skills, Taiki arrives early for open practice sessions with the high school badminton team, but he is always second to arrive, with Chinatsu Kano, a first-year senior high student and his love interest, being the first.
Chinatsu is not only the top player on her basketball team, known for her strong character and popularity, but Taiki also feels overshadowed by her presence and assumes she could never reciprocate his feelings.
In a surprising twist, Chinatsu moves into Taiki’s home. Striving to prove himself worthy of her affection, Taiki sets his goals to align with hers: to compete in the Nationals. With renewed motivation, he commits to daily practice, which fuels both his badminton skills and his feelings for Chinatsu.
The anime adaptation of Blue Box is produced by Telecom Animation Film, the same studio known for hits like Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro and The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse.
Blue Box Episode 1 Summary
Every morning, Taiki Inomata watches his upperclassman, Chinatsu Kano, practice basketball with great diligence. One day, she accidentally strikes him with a basketball and apologizes by offering him a candy bar. Impressed by her dedication, Taiki develops feelings for her.
Despite his relative anonymity compared to Chinatsu’s popularity, Taiki is determined to draw closer to her. His friend Kyo teases that it’s an impossible proposition, while their friend Hina shares vague advice on what girls like.
The next day, Taiki spots Chinatsu outside the gym. Observing her sniffle, he offers her something from his bag. She playfully teases him but appreciates the gesture. Encouraged by her recognizing his name, Taiki immerses himself in badminton practice, driven to improve.
After an intense practice session, Taiki and Chinatsu connect over their mothers’ basketball pasts. Taiki remembers seeing her upset after losing a chance at nationals, a moment she had seemingly forgotten. Later, Taiki learns from his mom that Chinatsu’s family plans to move overseas. Shocked, he rushes to school to find her, only to discover she’s staying with a family friend. To his astonishment, the next morning, he finds out that Chinatsu has moved in with his family, setting the stage for further interactions.
