In contrast to many seasonal anime that premiere on Crunchyroll, Uzumaki takes a different route as it is produced by an American studio, Production I.G. USA, meaning its debut airing was on Adult Swim.

For international audiences, the series can be streamed on the subscription service HBO Max a day after it airs on Adult Swim, which limits availability in various regions. Unfortunately, Uzumaki is not accessible via popular global streaming platforms like Crunchyroll or Netflix.

This anime unfolds the story of Kirie Goshima, the female lead, who starts to notice unsettling occurrences in her hometown, Kurouzu village. These occurrences are eerily linked to the spiral shape that lures people in. It becomes apparent just how perilous the spiral curse is when Kirie herself suffers its effects.

The premiere episode features Shuichi Saitou, Kirie’s boyfriend, urging her to flee the village due to his father’s deadly obsession with the spiral. The episode concludes with the tragic fate of Shuichi’s father, consumed by the spiral’s curse. Additionally, Kirie’s close friend, Azami, also falls victim to the curse, resulting in her untimely death.

The second episode illustrates Kirie’s personal encounter with the spiral curse, which manifests through her transforming hair. This curse isn’t limited to her as her classmates also suffer; Katayama turns into a snail, and another classmate faces a tragic end due to Kirie’s spiral hair.

In the third episode, Shuichi’s mother begins to unravel psychologically, haunted by her husband’s relentless torment. Her struggle leads to a tragic end when she injures herself, and concurrently, the village of Kurouzu suffers devastation from a raging storm, cutting off any escape routes for its inhabitants.
