Concerns over Diablo 4’s Dark Citadel mode promoting co-op play instead of solo play

Some Diablo 4 players are concerned that they may not be able to play solo in the game’s upcoming cooperative mode, Dark Citadel.

During Gamescom 2024, Blizzard released additional details about the upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4. Among the announcements was the introduction of a new cooperative mode, called Dark Citadel.

Blizzard has divided this final challenge into three separate Wings, each containing hordes of demonic enemies to battle, mysteries to solve, and a formidable ultimate boss. Successfully conquering the Citadel will grant players access to exclusive items, such as cosmetics.

In a video titled ‘Inside the Game’, developers announced that Dark Citadel allows for two-player teams, but they suggest that four-player groups are the best way to take on the challenge.

Some solo players are concerned that the introduction of the highly sought-after party finder system may leave them feeling abandoned.

Following the release of information about Dark Citadel, a user on the Diablo 4 Forums expressed their reluctance to purchase the game if it includes mandatory group play for certain content.

The worry is that even with the addition of the group finder feature, solo players would still prefer to experience the content alone.

Someone responded to a comment about the group finder being a solution by stating, “The issue is not finding a group, but rather having to be in a group.”

Although one person argued against the criticism surrounding the bubbling feature, stating that Diablo 4 does not have to constantly cater to every player, another user pointed out that Dark Citadel would be the first time in the franchise’s history where group play is required for a piece of content.

Nonetheless, there are still many individuals who intend to reserve their opinions until further evidence is revealed. The confirmation from Blizzard is still pending as to whether or not individual players will have the opportunity to participate in Dark Citadel without joining a group.

The goal is for those who are not interested in co-op to have the option of hiring Mercenaries or other companions to assist them in overcoming obstacles.
