Pokemon Go has introduced its first new Dynamax option, prompting concerns among trainers regarding the mechanic’s future due to its increased upgrade costs.
The Psychic Spectacular event features Dynamax Beldum, significantly expanding the roster for a feature recently integrated during the Go Big event.
While the beloved Steel/Psychic Pokémon and its potent evolutionary line are great additions, Niantic’s execution has raised worries among players about the management of upcoming Dynamax Pokémon—including the anticipated inclusion of Gigantamax forms.
As noted by one player on Reddit, upgrading a Dynamax Beldum demands more Candy than previously required for other Dynamax Pokémon.

According to the shared screenshot, unlocking Dynamax Beldum’s Max Guard requires 400 Max Particles and 70 Beldum Candy. In contrast, Kanto starters, Wooloo, and Skwovet only necessitated 50 Candy for the same upgrade.
Subsequent upgrades also come with a higher price tag, with an additional point made that leveling up to level 3 requires 10 more Candy XL compared to previous Dynamax Pokémon.
“I think this represents a new ‘tier system’ for rarity,” the player explained, drawing a comparison to how different Buddy Pokémon accrue Candy at varying rates, with rarer ones demanding players to walk greater distances.
This insight suggests that future additions, including Legendary Pokémon and Gigantamax forms, may come with even steeper upgrade costs. As one commenter expressed, “Once this hits Pokémon that are relatively rare, the entire mechanic will be overpriced. It’s akin to converting candy to XL candy.”
Compounding the frustration around these cost increases is the fact that obtaining Candy for rare Pokémon is already a challenge. For instance, Legendaries require players to walk an extensive 20km with them as their Buddy to earn any Candy, limiting their farming opportunities primarily to Raids, which demand time, resources, and frequently other players.
This predicament led one trainer to question, “How the hell are we supposed to get enough candy and XL candy to power up moves and the Pokémon itself?”
By establishing that Beldum—a Pokémon requiring more resources to train—Niantic has set a concerning precedent for the future of Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics, likely increasing player frustration with a feature that has already been met with mixed reactions.
