Confirmed: Overwatch Mobile Game Revealed in Jason Schreier’s Latest Book

In the recently published book by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, titled Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, it has been confirmed that Overwatch Mobile is currently under development.

Throughout the course of writing Play Nice, Schreier engaged with over 300 former and current employees to gather insights on the rise and decline of Blizzard. This thorough exploration includes personal accounts concerning the widespread layoffs that impacted the company and various concerning legal issues.

Among Blizzard’s key titles, Overwatch faced severe repercussions stemming from the company’s difficulties. The cancellation of the PvE mode for Overwatch 2 on March 22 highlighted the negative impact of these challenges, resulting from disappointing sales.

Moreover, the book disclosed that planned projects, such as an Overwatch series for Netflix, fell through due to Blizzard’s legal action against the streaming platform.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t all unfavorable news for the franchise. After much anticipation, Schreier has now confirmed the existence of Overwatch Mobile, quelling years of speculation.

Schreier noted, “The Overwatch project is being spearheaded by Walter Kong, who has managed the continuous introduction of new heroes and content for Overwatch 2 alongside other projects, including the mobile adaptation.”

Kong holds the position of General Manager for Overwatch at Blizzard. Although the book does not specify the anticipated release date for the mobile game, its active development was confirmed. There remains uncertainty regarding whether this mobile version will be a direct port of the existing game or feature entirely new elements.

Overwatch is not the first title from Activision to venture into the mobile gaming arena. In 2023, Activision revealed that Call of Duty Mobile had surpassed the mainline series, achieving over $3 billion in revenue.

Building on that success, Warzone Mobile was launched in March 2024, receiving over 50 million pre-registrations prior to its official debut.

While it is uncertain if Overwatch Mobile will achieve the same remarkable success as Call of Duty, the potential is clearly there for a strong reception in the gaming market.
