Confusion Surrounds the Sequel to 28 Years Later Released After 28 Years

Confusion Surrounds the Sequel to 28 Years Later Released After 28 Years

Exciting developments are unfolding regarding the sequel “28 Years Later,” particularly surrounding its title and release date. However, this news has sparked a wave of confusion among fans.

This upcoming film serves as a sequel to “28 Days Later”(2002) and “28 Weeks Later”(2007), featuring an impressive cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jodie Comer.

Directed by Danny Boyle, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alex Garland, the movie recently debuted its trailer, which has rapidly become a sensation, amassing over 16 million views within just ten days.

Nevertheless, the trailer has also led to some misunderstandings, particularly due to the appearance of a character resembling Cillian Murphy’s iconic figure from the original film, a speculation that has since been dismissed. As if that wasn’t enough, a new title for the sequel has left fans scratching their heads once again.

Title and Release Date Announced for “28 Years Later”Sequel

Following the buzz around the trailer, Sony Pictures has officially revealed the title of the sequel: “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” This film is being directed by Nia DaCosta, known for her work on the “Candyman”remake and “The Marvels.”

The original creators, Boyle and Garland, are collaboratively penning the script, with the anticipation building for the film’s release on January 16, 2026, which intriguingly falls six months after its predecessor—just under 28 weeks later.

However, the timing and title resemblance have led to further confusion, causing audiences to mistakenly believe that DaCosta’s project and Boyle’s film are synonymous.

One fan expressed their bemusement on social media, questioning the release of a trailer so early: “My only question is why did we get a trailer when the movie is still a whole other year away,” while another contributor remarked, “Already??? They made both movies at the same time?”

Frustration has also been voiced regarding the inconsistency in the film titles, with one user lamenting, “A missed opportunity to make a prequel film entitled 28 Months Later – that would address the gap between 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, and 28 Years Later.”

The transition between directors has further complicated matters, leading fans to inquire if Boyle will oversee “28 Years Later”but not the sequel. Many have shared their mixed feelings about this change: “It’ll be interesting. Usually, I don’t like it when a series of films changes directors, but I can be open-minded. I love Danny Boyle. That said, I did not know this was going to be a trilogy.”

As confirmed, “28 Years Later” is indeed set to become a trilogy, with no information yet regarding who will direct the third installment or the release timeline associated with it.
