Connection Between The Witcher 4 and Netflix Series Explained by Developers

Will The Witcher 4 forge a connection with the Netflix series? Here’s a comprehensive overview of what the developers have disclosed thus far regarding any potential link between the two.

The Witcher 4 made its official debut during the 2024 Game Awards, revealing Ciri as the main protagonist. Following the tremendous success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Netflix commissioned a series based on the original literature, featuring Henry Cavill, known for his role as Superman, portraying Geralt of Rivia.

Since its release, the Netflix adaptation has gained significant popularity, and despite Cavill’s departure from the project, a fourth and final season is currently underway with Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role of Geralt.

As the first installment of The Witcher video game series to release after the Netflix adaptation, speculation has risen regarding whether The Witcher 4 will align more closely with the show or the original book narrative.

Ciri is set to take the lead as the primary character in The Witcher 4.

While Ciri plays a pivotal role in both the books and the Netflix show, fans should note that her narrative in the video games remains relatively unexplored. Although she is a playable character in The Witcher 3, she often takes a backseat to Geralt’s storyline.

Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher has proven to be a significant success for the streaming platform.

In a recent interview with Games.ch, game director Sebastian Kalemba and executive producer Małgorzata Mitrega delved into the relationship between the success of the Netflix series and The Witcher 4.

Discussion begins at the 11:30 minute mark

Kalemba remarked, “Typically, franchises exhibit some synergy across different media, which helps attract newcomers. However, I believe we don’t heavily rely on that aspect.”

Mitrega echoed this sentiment, stating, “The storytelling we’re developing and our project’s direction stem from our origins.” She acknowledged, however, that the team draws inspiration from Andrzej Sapkowski’s original works while emphasizing that Ciri’s journey is the core focus of their narrative.

While The Witcher 4 may not be tightly woven into the fabric of the Netflix series, it will continue Geralt’s legacy from The Witcher 3 and is expected to feature Gwent, the beloved card game.
