The decision to remove a controversial new movie featuring Johnny Depp from theaters in LA is causing a stir, but the reasoning behind it may not be what you expect.
Despite the intense public scrutiny surrounding his highly-publicized legal trial against former partner Amber Heard, divisive actor Johnny Depp’s latest movie, in which he stars as the equally controversial Louis XV, has received little attention.
As of now, screenings of Jeanne du Barry are being cancelled throughout LA, solely due to low ticket sales rather than any of the aforementioned reasons.
According to a post on X/Twitter, one moviegoer expressed disappointment over the low ticket sales of the film Jeanne du Barry, stating that it has already been removed from most theaters in Los Angeles. The premiere in Hollywood only managed to sell 2 tickets.
According to the post, Sherman Oaks is the only theater that is still screening Jeanne du Barry, but it only sold 7 tickets. After tonight, the movie will no longer be playing in any other theaters in Los Angeles.
Despite the film having already been released on Netflix in France and in theaters throughout the UK, there is speculation among fans that Depp’s reputation in the US may be impacting the planned nationwide release.
“Despite his strong support and dedicated defenders online, I find myself confused by the situation. Do these supporters only buy tickets to his actual work?”a second fan added, while a third stated their belief that Johnny Depp’s career is over and he is no longer taken seriously as an actor, becoming a joke to everyone.
This week, Depp has once again made headlines due to the release of a new film, The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch. The film contains a controversial joke about Depp and Heard, which has sparked backlash on various social media platforms.
“On May 2, Jeanne du Barry was released in theaters across North America. The film’s synopsis described Jeanne’s use of her charms and intelligence to climb the social ladder, eventually becoming one of King Louis XV’s favorites and falling deeply in love. Despite societal conventions, Jeanne defies expectations and moves to Versailles.”
