Controversy Surrounds Barbie Hsu’s Family Gathering After Her Passing

On February 9, 2023, the Chinese media outlet 163 reported that the family and close friends of Barbie Hsu attracted significant social media attention following the emergence of photographs depicting them at the late actress’s residence. The gathering, which took place on the evening of February 8, included Barbie Hsu’s mother, Huang Chunmei, her sister Dee Hsu, TV host Aya, actress Makiyo, and other acquaintances, who brought a cake to the Taipei apartment where Hsu’s ashes are kept.

The group spent several hours in Hsu’s home before departing separately. According to reports from China Times, nearly all attendees continued their evening at a TV host’s residence, leaving the gathering late into the night. However, the images of the family and friends with the cake incited vigorous debate on social media platforms in China, as many netizens deemed the celebration inappropriate given that only a week had passed since Hsu’s death.
