Controversy Surrounding Borderlands 4 Reveal Amidst Box Office Bombing of Movie

During Gamescom, Gearbox Software announced the release of Borderlands 4, which may not have been the most strategic decision considering the failure of the Borderlands film at the box office.

During the broadcast of the Gamescom: Opening Night Live show, hosted by Geoff Keighley, viewers were pleasantly surprised with an announcement trailer for Borderlands 4. Although Gearbox developers had hinted at its eventual comeback, the reveal was unexpected.

Despite the franchise’s new art style, it is not the sole topic of discussion among fans. In fact, many have also taken note of the peculiar timing of the announcement, possibly intended to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the underwhelming new movie.

According to Box Office Mojo, as of August 20, the film has only earned $18.6 million worldwide, despite reportedly having a budget of over $130 million.

Despite this disappointment, those watching Opening Night Live on Twitter/X couldn’t resist making fun of Borderlands 4 for what they deemed the “worst-timed announcement of the year.”

“A user deemed the reveal as “awkward”as it appeared that Gearbox’s initial intention was to capitalize on the success of the Borderlands movie. However, if not for that reason, the user suggested that Gearbox may be attempting to redeem themselves after the movie’s poor reception.”

TheNCSmaster, a popular Twitter/X user, wasted no time in turning the untimely Borderlands 4 announcement into a hilarious meme that quickly spread like wildfire on various social media platforms.

Despite any delays, Gearbox has been diligently working on the development of the shooter for a considerable amount of time, according to a tweet by modder EpicNNG that was retweeted by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.

Currently, Borderlands enthusiasts are left to speculate about when the development team will release additional details and gameplay footage.

The next installment in the mainline series is expected to release in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
