Controversy Surrounding HYBE’s LE SSERAFIM Docu-Series and Bang Si Hyuk’s Advice to Yunjin

The recently released five-part docu-series by HYBE that focuses on K-pop group LE SSERAFIM has sparked a wave of backlash on the internet, specifically due to a scene involving Yunjin, a member of the group, and Bang Si Hyuk, the founder of HYBE.

The episode, which was broadcasted on July 29 at KST, depicts a personal discussion between Yunjin and Bang Si Hyuk.

In the interview, Yunjin discusses her challenges with a lack of inspiration and the pressure of facing criticism from the public for her debut teaser. She also shares her determination to make a positive impact in the idol industry.

Yunjin expressed her growing sense of duty and burden to fulfill her initial commitments.

It has become burdensome for her to handle the increasing number of inquiries from the public about her progress and perceived failures.

People say things like, ‘So what have you changed?’ ‘How are you gonna make changes by yourself?’ Things like that. At the beginning, I didn’t really pay attention to it. But as time passes, I feel more responsible about what I said. So, I feel like I should do more and wonder if I’m doing enough.

Bang Si Hyuk recommended to Yunjin that she focus on her songwriting and not worry too much about public perception or the company’s reputation.

Despite its intention to promote artistic freedom, this advice has faced backlash from netizens who believe that it disregards the significance of taking public feedback into consideration.

The backlash on the internet has been rapid and outspoken.

Critics contend that Bang’s suggestions are not in line with the current state of the industry and assert that HYBE should be more aware of public opinion.

The documentary is widely viewed as an effort by HYBE to control public opinion, utilizing Yunjin’s hardships as a form of protection.

SEE BELOW FOR A FEW REMARKS FROM THE NETIZENS:

“Bang Si Hyuk should care more about what the public thinks. I’m rooting for Yunjin nonetheless, though.”

“Why shouldn’t they pay attention to public opinion? His logic is strange.”

“HYBE should actually be more mindful. I wish they’d at least be as competent as a regular company. To all the artists, hwaiting!”

“Si Hyuk, you SHOULD care.”

“Their (lack of) skills might be a factor in all the criticism, but HYBE also seems to be a large part of it… The concepts and songs, as well as the way they always go for the underdog-rising vibe, are really off-putting.”

“This is exactly why people say you need to be around good adults to guide you, but [LE SSERAFIM] is stuck there…”

“It’s a documentary where you can see LE SSERAFIM members work hard and stand up for themselves despite their fears. I wish people wouldn’t criticize it without even watching it.”
