Controversy Surrounds ILLIT Members’ Social Media Activity

The ILLIT members have been receiving criticism after their X (formerly Twitter) account followed and subsequently unfollowed fan accounts.

On May 20, 2024, a post titled “The account that ILLIT’s members had accidentally followed and then unfollowed”was shared on TheQoo, one of the most popular online community forums in South Korea.

The original poster shared tweets from an international fan of ILLIT in their post. One of the tweets mentioned that the fan was being followed by ILLIT’s verified X account, which is used by the members to share selfies and everyday photos of themselves.

This caused a negative reaction, as it was discovered that in previous tweets, they had accused NewJeans of copying other groups. As a result, the fan has now made her X account private.

After further investigation, it was discovered that ILLIT was not only following one, but three fan accounts in a separate post.

There is a Korean fan who is a big supporter of Moka, one of the Japanese members of ILLIT.

Shortly after ILLIT was discovered to be following these accounts, they promptly unfollowed them.

Despite the quick notice by Korean netizens, the interaction did not go unnoticed. Critics berated the girls for their shady behavior, pointing out that their personal accounts had previously posted negative tweets about NewJeans. This only solidified the belief that the members’ true colors were being revealed through their choice to follow these fans, as the accounts were thought to be under their control.

Several comments were observed, stating,

  • “I wonder what kind of explanation they will have for this. Are they gonna make up an excuse that a staff member accidentally did this?”
  • “This is both f*cking sad and funny. They were trying to get people’s sympathy by reporting hate comments, but are acting like NewJeans’s antis behind people’s backs.”
  • “Even the members are like this… Everyone in HYBE is the same.”
  • “Even if you were writing fiction, you’d never imagine something like this happening.”
  • “The culprit has to be one of the Japanese members.”
  • “These young kids are scary…”
  • “Like company, like members.”
  • “Go practice singing instead.”
  • “Has there been any idol in history that followed a hate account? Isn’t this legendary? I have seen idols accidentally liking Instagram posts, but this is something else.”
  • “They can’t sing, and even their personality is like this…”

Currently, BELIFT Lab (ILLIT’s agency) has not yet addressed the backlash.
