Many loyal Costco shoppers are expressing their disappointment as news of changes to a beloved cookie spread on social media, quickly going viral.
On July 31, a Reddit user discovered that Kirkland Signature chocolate chips had been substituted with a different brand during a recent trip to their local store.
In a corresponding image, they unveiled what has replaced it – Nestlé Toll House Semi-Sweet Morsels.
The caption on the post stated that Nestle had completely replaced the chocolate chips. This caused a stir on the Costco subreddit, with many others expressing their disappointment and devastation.
The change caused customers to launch inquiries, resulting in one individual contacting Costco directly to seek clarification about the replacement. Fortunately, they received a response via email, however, it was not favorable.

“Regrettably, Costco has decided to discontinue the KS Chocolate Chips. The reason behind this decision is the increasing costs of cocoa.”
They explained that they had carefully considered their decision, but ultimately, the high costs presented by their suppliers made it impossible for their Kirkland Signature Chocolate Chips to compete in value with well-known brands like Nestle Toll House.
Despite their disclosure that they would likely stay out of KS for at least 12 months, there was still some hope as they stated their long-term plan was to eventually offer the item again in the future.
The customers were devastated, to say the least.
“It remains my go-to product. I have yet to find anything that compares to it, even after diligently searching for a replacement when it was discontinued a few years ago,”one person shared.
“I would happily pay an additional dollar and fifty cents for Kirkland rather than Nestle,”another person stated. “I suppose they have successfully conveyed their message.”
Although it was a big letdown, it’s not a permanent loss. They surpass Nestle in all aspects,”one person stated. Another person raved, “Kirkland truly has the best chocolate chips ever.”
This is not the initial occasion that a discontinued fan-favorite has sparked widespread anger. Earlier in January, McDonald’s reintroduced one of their most beloved items that they had stopped producing after receiving numerous petitions.
