Couple Saves Over $10,000 on DIY Kitchen Renovation Thanks to TikTok

Amber Morris and her husband, Dan, recently showcased their remarkable kitchen transformation, revealing that they managed to save over $10,000 by doing it themselves after watching DIY videos on TikTok.

New Home, New Vision

The couple bought a four-bedroom property in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, in July. Built in 2002, the house required a stylish refresh, with the kitchen being their top priority. However, a quote of $11,000 from contractors for renovations prompted them to explore a more budget-friendly approach.

Smart Choices Lead to Significant Savings

Dan, a systems engineer, and Amber, who works in social media management, decided to take the reins of the project themselves. They creatively opted for budget-conscious solutions, including $50 vinyl wraps for their countertops instead of a complete replacement.

Diligent DIY Efforts Pay Off

Equipped with a $50 spray gun from Amazon, the couple embarked on their renovation journey by repainting cabinets and installing a new sink, tap, and extractor fan themselves. They even mixed a custom paint color at B&Q, inspired by shades from Farrow & Ball, resulting in a $105 savings.

A Transformation to Be Proud Of

In total, the kitchen renovation tallied up to just $713, culminating in a stunning space that now exudes brightness and freshness. Amber expressed their motivation: “We knew we wanted to make the kitchen brighter because it was quite dark. But $11K was silly money to pay for it — so we decided to do it ourselves even though we’re desk job people, not DIY people.”

Learning on the Go

The couple prepared for their DIY adventure by watching TikTok tutorials and consulting family for guidance. Amber noted, “Before this, the most we had ever done was painted a wall. We worked out what we needed to buy to do it ourselves and crossed our fingers it would come together.”

The project commenced in mid-July, and they fully dedicated a weekend to painting and revamping their kitchen cabinets. They splurged $375 on stylish new taps and a sink but opted to install those themselves to keep costs down.

A Home Transformed

Ultimately, the fruits of their labor resulted in a beautifully reimagined kitchen that now serves as a lively space for the couple and their beloved dog, Emmy.
